Hobbit (Swedish)

6b J. R. R. Tolkien. Illustrated by Tové Jansson. Örebro: Rabén & Sjögren, 1962. First Swedish Edition. Notes "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort." "The Hobbit" is a timeless adventure that will transport you to a magical world filled with wonder and danger. J.R.R. Tolkien's masterful storytelling introduces you to Bilbo Baggins, an unassuming hobbit who embarks on an epic journey alongside a band of dwarves and a wise wizard. Their quest to reclaim treasure guarded by the fearsome dragon Smaug takes them through lush forests, treacherous mountains, and encounters with elves, trolls, and goblins. With rich characters, breathtaking landscapes, and a compelling narrative, "The Hobbit" is a captivating tale of courage, friendship, and self-discovery that will leave you spellbound and eager to explore the enchanted realms of Middle-earth, making it a must-read for anyone seeking a captivating and unforgettable adventure. Tové Jansson, the beloved Finnish-Swedish author and illustrator, is celebrated for her Moomin books, where her lyrical storytelling and expressive illustrations often highlight natural elements like the moon—used symbolically to evoke mystery, solitude, and emotional depth. In 1962, Jansson illustrated the first Swedish edition of The Hobbit (Bilbo – En hobbits äventyr). Her distinct, Nordic visual style—more whimsical and abstract than Tolkien’s usual aesthetic—received a mixed response: some readers admired the fresh, dreamlike perspective she brought, while Tolkien himself reportedly disliked the departure from his intended tone. Despite that, her edition is now considered a rare and fascinating piece of literary history. Description Pink illustrated upper board with green cloth spine. Spine slightly faded. Light wearing on corners. Sun fading to upper portion of lower board. Illustrations throughout. Fine condition overall.
