Hitḥadshut HaNefesh

This title is in Hebrew. Hitḥadshut HaNefesh is a spiritual and intellectual journey into one of the greatest challenges of Israeli reality: the possibility of growth precisely through crisis and brokenness. From its very beginnings, the Hasidic movement emerged out of a world marked by upheaval, loss, and deep wounds. The Baal Shem Tov and his disciples, drawing from their personal and communal experiences, developed a bold idea: that disaster, sorrow, and existential upheaval can become catalysts for spiritual growth. In recent years, this idea has found surprising confirmation in psychological research under the concept known as “post-traumatic growth.” This book brings together the teachings of Hasidism, psychological research, and contemporary Israeli reality. Concepts from the world of Hasidic thought, alongside modern therapeutic theories, are presented here in a clear and accessible way, accompanied by dozens of stories of growth emerging from the events of October 7 and the war that followed. Hitḥadshut HaNefesh is not a book of easy comfort or quick solutions. It is a book that invites reflection, attentiveness, and inner honesty, offering readers a way to see crisis not merely as an end, but as a gateway to a deeper dimension of life, faith, and humanity.
