Sir John Fallstaf by Hirschfeld

This original portfolio captures Al Hirschfeld’s unmistakable linework and wit, created for the television series The Play of the Week, which aired from 1959 to 1961 and brought Broadway theater into American homes. Published by Laurent Ltd., the collection features six lithographs inspired by iconic productions including The Exorcism, Waiting for Godot, Henry IV, Part 1, and Rhinoceros. Each piece reflects Hirschfeld’s ability to distill personality and story through a single, fluid contour. Hirschfeld’s work has long been celebrated for its humor, rhythm, and elegance, defining how generations came to see the theater. Beyond his artistic brilliance, there’s a playful secret woven into his legacy: beginning in 1945, he began hiding his daughter’s name, “Nina,” within his drawings. Fans delighted in hunting for her name among sleeves, hair, and folds of fabric, a game so popular that in 1960 Hirschfeld began noting the number of Ninas beside his signature! This portfolio is a beautiful example of Hirschfeld’s theatrical world, where every line holds both character and charm. A timeless treasure for collectors, art lovers, and anyone who still enjoys the thrill of searching for a hidden Nina!  Size: 13.0" x 16.0" Artist: Al Hirschfeld Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear.
