It protects our bodies, helps regulate body temperature, allows us to have a sense of touch and importantly is the first thing people see of us. The skin is made up of three layers – the hypodermis, the dermis, and epidermis. The epidermis is the outer layer and part of the skin we see. While some people are blessed with clear, healthy skin, or may even experience an occasional outbreak from time to time, sadly others can be plagued daily from serious, unsightly and sometimes painful skin problems. To protect the skin from these issues, addressing the outside factors is not enough. Skin issues must be addressed from the inside, where it counts. Should I also treat my condition externally? While it is most important to address the internal issues relating to your condition, Dr. Diamond has always felt that you can accompany that healing process on the outside too. As long as you are working on controlling or alleviating the inside issue, there are wonderful things like Calendula ointment (from the marigold) that can support external healing. See our other products section for external support. What is Natural Medicine? When people think of natural or alternative medicines, they need to remember that through much of history, natural medicine was just plain medicine. Today’s modern day synthetic pharmaceuticals did not exist thousands of years ago, so individuals and medical professionals alike would safely turn to medicines from botanicals, flowers, and herbs. Dating back thousands of years, there are many centuries old types of natural healing. Chinese Medicine has been healing with herbs for over 5000 years. Ayurvedic Medicine, from Eastern countries dates back almost 6000 years. There was also Hippocrates (c. 460-377 BC), a Greek physician that is frequently referred to as the Father of Medicine. He practiced herbal medicine and was known for saying “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” The mind, the body and the spirit are what make a person whole, and thus contribute to a person’s overall well-being. Addressing the body as a whole is what Dr. Diamond had always done in his fulltime practice. He and other natural, alternative and integrative doctors are about wellness care and staying healthy. The importance of this is even more relevant today, with the cost in traditional healthcare and the negative, unhealthy factors that surround us every day. Thousands of years of safe, positive results are why nearly 60% of us turn to our supplements every day. It is a known fact that most of us do not get all the vitamins and nutrients we need in our diets, due inappropriate food choices, as well as harmful pesticides, GMO’s, nutrient depleted soil, pollutants in the air, etc. (These are extremely dangerous in other ways, but that’s a whole other conversation.) Today, even traditional doctors are becoming increasingly open to recommending non-drug alternatives, which is an impressive change of events. Knowledge of the efficacy of supplements and their safety record continues to widen their appeal to past critics, who now understand their importance and want to keep themselves, their loved ones and their patients healthy and happy.
