Herne The Hunter

Mysterious, ancient, and haunting the edge of English folklore, Herne the Hunter has captured imaginations for centuries. From his first literary appearance in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor to his emergence as a horned god in modern Paganism, Herne remains an elusive and powerful figure. In Herne the Hunter: Myth, Legend, and Devotion to the Horned God, author Rowan Hunter traces the arc of Herne’s legend across historical roots and literary mentions to his living presence in contemporary spirituality. Drawing on foundational folklore scholarship and years of personal devotional practice, Hunter invites readers into a relationship with Herne not just as myth but also as god. For witches, Druids, polytheists, and all who are called to the beating of Herne’s hooves, come into the forest where the hunter still walks.
