Hennie Graafland Star Astilbe

Hennie Graafland Star Astilbe (Astilbe simplicifolia 'Hennie Graafland')Hennie Graafland Star Astilbe is a petite shade perennial valued for light pink plumes, shiny dark green foliage, and a neat mounded habit. Its compact size makes it especially useful in small shaded spaces where larger astilbes may feel too tall or broad. In early to midsummer, delicate pink sprays rise above the foliage and add soft color to border fronts, shaded paths, woodland edges, containers, and mass plantings. With humus-rich soil, steady moisture, and protection from hot dry sun, Hennie Graafland Star Astilbe brings refined texture and easy elegance to cool garden settings. Distinctive FeaturesHennie Graafland Star Astilbe forms a compact mound of shiny, deeply cut, dark green foliage that remains attractive when soil moisture is consistent. Light pink flower plumes appear on slender stems and create a delicate, airy effect above the foliage. Its smaller size and tidy outline make it a strong choice for edging, containers, and close-up plantings where foliage detail matters. The soft pink flowers blend easily with white, blue, lavender, silver, and burgundy shade companions without overpowering the design. Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in part shade to full shade, with partial sun tolerated in cooler sites where soil stays consistently moist. Soil: Prefers moist, humus-rich, organically enriched, well-drained soil and appreciates a cool root zone. Water: Keep soil evenly moist for best foliage and flowering, especially during warm weather or container growth. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 8. Mature Size: Typically reaches 10 to 18 inches tall in bloom and 12 to 24 inches wide. Habit: Forms a compact, mounded to upright, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with delicate flower stems above the leaves. Foliage: Features shiny dark green, finely cut foliage with a soft, fern-like texture. Flower Color: Produces light pink plumes that bring a gentle, airy accent to shaded plantings. Bloom Season: Blooms in early to midsummer, often around June to July depending on climate. Fruit: Not grown for ornamental fruit, though dried flower heads can add subtle seasonal texture. Deer Resistance: Astilbe is generally resistant to deer and rabbits, though browsing can vary by location. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Place near the front of shaded beds where the shiny foliage and soft pink plumes can be appreciated up close. Shade Borders: Use along shaded paths, border fronts, and foundation edges for refined texture and gentle flower color. Edging: Plant in a repeating line to create a low, soft edge in cool, moist garden spaces. Woodland Gardens: Pair with miniature hostas, ferns, brunnera, heuchera, hellebores, and other shade-loving perennials. Containers: Grow in shaded patio pots, entry planters, or mixed containers where steady moisture can be maintained. Mass Planting: Plant in groups for a fuller carpet of glossy foliage and light pink summer plumes. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water regularly so the soil stays evenly moist but not waterlogged through the growing season. Mulch: Apply organic mulch to conserve moisture, keep roots cool, and protect the shallow crown from heat stress. Soil Care: Add compost or leaf mold to maintain humus-rich soil and support healthy foliage growth. Deadheading: Remove faded plumes for a tidy look, or leave dried flower heads standing for subtle texture. Division: Divide clumps every 3 to 4 years if they become crowded or need to be spread to new areas. Pruning: Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Container Care: Monitor potted plants closely in summer because small containers can dry quickly. Why Choose Hennie Graafland Star Astilbe?
