Hedera helix, commonly known as Common Ivy, is a non-native evergreen vine valued for its dense growth and ability to climb or spread as a groundcover. This woody vine attaches itself by aerial rootlets and can climb structures, trees, and walls, or spread horizontally across the ground. When supported, it may climb 30 to 50 feet or more; as a groundcover, it typically forms a low mat 6 to 12 inches tall with indefinite spread. The foliage consists of dark green, lobed juvenile leaves. Mature plants can produce unlobed leaves and small greenish flowers in late summer to fall, followed by dark berries. Flowering and fruiting generally occur only on mature, climbing stems. Common Ivy grows best in part shade to full shade and tolerates a range of soil conditions, provided they are well-drained. It withstands urban conditions and dense shade but can spread aggressively and may require regular management to control growth.
