HEAD — The Monkees Film T-Shirt (1968) Released in 1968, Head was The Monkees’ psychedelic, anti-establishment answer to their own manufactured image — a surreal, fast-cut, anything-goes film that blew apart the rules of pop stardom. Written and produced by Jack Nicholson and directed by Bob Rafelson, it replaced sitcom innocence with satire, war imagery, advertising chaos, and existential punchlines. The film’s striking artwork — fragmented faces, bold color blocks, and pop-art disorientation — perfectly captured the era’s visual language and the band’s desire to escape the box they’d been put in. It’s not just a movie; it’s a manifesto in montage, a cult artifact of late-’60s counterculture. For generations of fans and design obsessives, Head has become a touchstone — proof that even the most mainstream acts could turn radical, weird, and self-aware at the height of fame.
