Haworthia 'Bushman'

Description Haworthia 'Bushman' Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues   Haworthia 'Bushman' is a rare compact succulent from the Asphodelaceae family, native to the rocky, semi-arid regions of South Africa. It grows slowly indoors and has serious collector appeal for its architectural form and surprisingly forgiving nature.   The plant forms tight, symmetrical rosettes packed with firm, fleshy leaves that are deep green with translucent windowed tips and subtle raised white tubercles. It develops a clumping growth habit, gradually producing offsets around the mother rosette to create a dense cluster. It stays compact, rarely exceeding a few inches across, fitting easily into small pots or shallow dishes.   During its bloom period, it may produce slender flower stalks with small flowers, though a slight drop in nighttime temperature encourages better flowering. The plant does produce pollen and allergens during blooming, so keep that in mind if you have sensitivities at home. It releases oxygen at night.   Rotate it every few weeks for even growth. Move it outside to a sheltered spot in summer, but cover it from rain to prevent root rot. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It handles dry heated air well overall but is sensitive to air conditioning and heating vents blowing directly on it. The plant tolerates office LEDs.   Haworthia 'Bushman' does well in medium to bright indirect light and tolerates low light, including office LED conditions.   Water it every 2 to 3 weeks in summer and once a month or less in winter.   Haworthia 'Bushman' does best in a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite.   It prefers temperatures between 65 and 80°F and is not frost tolerant.   Haworthia 'Bushman' is a slow-growing succulent that needs fertilizer only once or twice during the active growing season.   It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, where temperatures rarely dip below 20°F. It grows outdoors in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. It also grows along the mild coastal stretches of Oregon and Washington where zone 9 conditions provide the gentle winters this compact succulent prefers. Q: Is Haworthia 'Bushman' safe for pets? A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs. Q: What window placement works best for this succulent? A: Haworthia 'Bushman' grows well in a bright, indirect window but also tolerates placement several feet away from the light source or under office overhead lighting. Q: How fast does Haworthia 'Bushman' grow? A: It grows slowly, adding offsets gradually over time rather than expanding rapidly. Q: Can this plant be propagated? A: Haworthia 'Bushman' is best propagated by separating the offsets that form around the base of the mother rosette and allowing each to callous for a day before potting in fresh, well-draining succulent mix. Q: Can Haworthia 'Bushman' go in an open terrarium? A: It works in an open terrarium where airflow is good and excess moisture can escape, but avoid closed terrariums since trapped humidity causes rot. Q: What happens if this plant gets overwatered? A: Excess moisture leads to root rot. Haworthia 'Bushman' requires the soil to dry completely between waterings and a pot with drainage holes.
