Hinoki Cypress

Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa)Hinoki Cypress is a graceful evergreen conifer valued for its refined pyramidal form, rich green foliage, and year-round landscape structure. Its fan-like sprays of scale-like foliage bring soft texture to specimen plantings, evergreen screens, conifer gardens, mixed borders, and larger foundation designs. This species can develop into a substantial tree over time, making it best suited for landscapes with enough room for its mature height and spread. With full sun to partial shade, moist well-drained soil, and protection from harsh drying wind, Hinoki Cypress brings long-lasting evergreen character and a polished architectural presence to the landscape. Distinctive FeaturesHinoki Cypress forms an upright pyramidal evergreen tree with layered branching and flattened sprays of aromatic green foliage. The foliage has a soft, refined texture that gives the tree a more graceful appearance than many rigid conifers. Small rounded cones may appear on mature plants, adding subtle detail among the foliage, though the main ornamental value comes from form, texture, and evergreen color. Native to Japan, this species has inspired many garden cultivars, but the straight species is best appreciated where it has space to become a larger, elegant evergreen tree. Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade, with full sun supporting the densest growth and strongest overall form. Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and performs poorly in constantly wet, compacted, or very dry conditions. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to prevent stress and foliage browning. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 8, with best performance in protected sites that avoid harsh drying winds and extreme heat. Mature Size: Typically reaches about 50 to 75 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide in favorable conditions, though cultivated landscape trees may remain smaller for many years. Habit: Forms a large, upright, pyramidal evergreen conifer with layered branching, flattened foliage sprays, and a refined mature outline. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a large evergreen focal point in spacious front yards, conifer gardens, estate landscapes, naturalistic plantings, or open mixed borders where its mature form can develop fully. Specimen Planting: Feature as a standalone conifer where its pyramidal form, layered branching, and rich green foliage can be appreciated through every season. Screening: Plant in loose groups or informal rows where a tall evergreen screen is desired and there is enough room for long-term growth. Mixed Border: Pair with broadleaf evergreens, flowering shrubs, ornamental grasses, and lower perennials to create contrast in form, texture, and seasonality. Large Foundation Planting: Use near large buildings or broad foundation beds where a substantial evergreen can provide height, structure, and year-round presence. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during the first few seasons to establish roots, then water during prolonged dry spells as needed. Mulching: Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition while keeping mulch away from the trunk. Pruning: Prune only lightly to remove dead, damaged, or poorly placed branches, avoiding hard cuts into old bare wood that may not regrow well. Spacing: Provide ample room for mature size and avoid planting too close to buildings, walkways, utilities, or narrow beds. Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed in spring based on soil conditions, using a moderate approach that avoids excessive soft growth. Site Protection: Plant where it has good air movement but some protection from harsh winter wind, reflected heat, and severe drought stress. Why Choose Hinoki Cypress? Elegant Evergreen Form: Develops a refined pyramidal shape with layered branching and strong year-round structure. Rich Green Foliage: Displays soft flattened sprays of green foliage that add texture and depth to the landscape. Long-Term Presence: Provides substantial evergreen height and character for larger landscapes, screens, and specimen plantings. Classic Conifer Appeal: Brings the graceful look of Japanese garden conifers into spacious residential and estate landscapes.
