Handmade Farrier Rasp Cowboy Knife – 6 Inch Bone Handle

Rasp steel knives carry a distinct craft tradition, made from repurposed rasps and files that were originally used for shaping wood and hooves. Farrier rasps in particular were valued for their toughness, and bladesmiths recognized that this hardened steel could be reforged into knives with excellent edge retention and a rugged, working-tool character. Cowboy-style knives grew out of ranch and range work, where hunters and cattle handlers needed a dependable blade for daily fieldwork. Combining that western tradition with rasp steel forging gives this knife a rustic, working-tool character that reflects both practical ranch heritage and the craft of repurposed steel bladesmithing. Skilled bladesmiths continue this practice today, hand-forging each blade using techniques passed down through generations. Introduction A good cowboy knife should feel rugged and ready for real work. This rasp steel cowboy knife is built with that in mind, featuring a carbon steel rasp blade paired with a natural bone handle for a comfortable, secure grip. Whether it's carried on the range or displayed as part of a collection, this knife brings together rustic craftsmanship and practical function in one piece. Blade The blade is what gives this knife its distinct character. Rasp steel comes from repurposed farrier rasps and files, high-carbon tool steel that holds an edge well after proper forging and heat treatment. The blade often retains some of the original textured surface from the rasp, giving each knife a rugged, one-of-a-kind look that sets it apart from standard smooth-finish blades. This knife measures 6 inches overall, giving it a compact, easy-to-handle size suited for everyday cowboy and ranch tasks. Uses & Safety A rasp steel cowboy knife works well for skinning, field dressing, and general ranch or outdoor tasks. Always cut away from your body, keep the blade sharp since a dull edge requires more force and increases slip risk, and store the knife in its leather sheath when not in use. After each use, wipe the blade clean and dry to prevent moisture buildup, then apply a light coat of oil to protect the steel and maintain its finish. If you're looking for a well-made blade built for real ranch and outdoor use, JW SteelCrafts' collection of handmade western knives offers rugged, hand-forged construction designed to perform season after season.
