What is a Damascus Steel Double Bit Axe Blank? A Damascus steel double-bit axe blank is a hand-forged Damascus steel axe head with two cutting edges on opposite sides, supplied without a handle as a raw blank ready for custom handle fitting. The double-bit design, historically known as the Labrys, is one of the oldest axe styles in human history, dating back to the ancient Minoan civilization of Crete around 3000 BCE. 2. What does Double Bit mean on an axe?  Double-bit refers to an axe with two cutting edges, one on each side of the axe head. The term bit refers to the cutting edge of an axe, so a double bit axe has two separate working cutting edges instead of the single edge found on a standard axe. This design allows craftsmen to maintain one edge for fine precision cutting and one edge for heavier chopping or splitting tasks. 3. What are the dimensions of this Damascus double-bit axe blank?  The JW SteelCrafts Damascus Double Bit Axe Blank features a 10-inch overall head width with dual 5-inch cutting edges on each side, a commanding and perfectly proportioned double bit axe head blank ideal for custom axe builds and serious Damascus collectors. 4. Does this axe blank come with a handle?  No, this is a raw axe head blank only supplied without a handle to allow custom axe builders and craftsmen to fit their preferred handle material of choice. It is ready for custom handle fitting, finishing, and sharpening to the builder's exact specifications. 5. What is the historical significance of the double-headed axe?  The double-headed axe known as the Labrys in ancient Greek is one of the oldest and most symbolically significant axe designs in human history, originating in the Minoan civilization of Crete around 3000 BCE. It served as both a practical cutting tool and a sacred ceremonial symbol across ancient Greek, Minoan, and Thracian cultures.
