Hana Bar Stool - Upholstered

The Moooi Hana Bar Stool Upholstered is Simone Bonanni's take on bringing that petal-shaped backrest from the Hana armchair up to counter height without losing what made the original design work so well. The backrest curves around you in this organic, flower-inspired way that actually provides real back support instead of just looking sculptural - which matters more than you'd think when you're sitting at a kitchen island for breakfast or working on a laptop at a bar-height desk. Available in two heights depending on your counter situation, and you can spec it in over 437 different fabric options, so whether you want something neutral that disappears into your space or a bold pop of color, you've got options. The metal base comes in either black or chrome, and both finishes feel substantial enough that the stool doesn't wobble or feel unstable when you're getting on and off it. What sets this apart from most bar stools is how Bonanni actually thought about prolonged sitting at counter height. The seat has enough cushioning that you're comfortable for extended periods, not just perching awkwardly like those minimalist stools that look great but nobody actually wants to sit on for more than ten minutes. The petal-shaped backrest provides this enveloping support that encourages you to actually lean back and relax rather than sitting rigidly upright. The proportions work well for most body types - the seat depth and backrest angle hit that sweet spot where you feel supported without being locked into one position. The upholstered version adds warmth and texture compared to the un-upholstered option, making it feel more like proper seating rather than just functional bar stools you tolerate. Moooi operates out of Amsterdam with this philosophy around creating pieces that balance artistic vision with genuine usability. Designer Simone Bonanni studied at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan and brings this Italian attention to ergonomics combined with that playful creativity Moooi's known for. The whole Hana family - which includes dining chairs and lounge seating - draws inspiration from blooming flowers, with "Hana" meaning blooming in Japanese. The brand works with designers who understand that beautiful furniture still needs to function well in everyday life, which is why pieces like the Hana Bar Stool show up in actual homes and hospitality spaces rather than just design magazines.
