Hamilton False Idol 151 Full Strength Rum 1000ml

False Idol is San Diego's own celebrated tiki bar, and this rum exists because its team needed something genuinely capable of standing up to the most aggressive, exotic cocktails on their menu. Ed Hamilton, the Ministry of Rum's founder, spent months working directly alongside False Idol's Anthony Schmidt, tasting and retasting blend after blend until they landed on the exact formula: 85% aged Demerara rum from Guyana, combined with 15% heavy-bodied Jamaican pot still rum from the celebrated Worthy Park Estate. The production process itself is genuinely deliberate — the full-strength Guyanese component, at 154 proof, is blended with the Jamaican rum at a formidable 170 proof, then slowly stirred together for a full 48 hours before the combined blend is finally brought down to its 151-proof bottling strength using filtered well water at the Five & 20 Distillery in Westfield, New York. Hamilton's own copy frames the goal directly: the rum "had to be strong, bold, balanced, and versatile enough not to overpower the more subtle cocktails" on False Idol's own menu — a genuinely demanding standard for a bottle already sitting at 151 proof. Chips Liquor's tasting found that "beyond the initial wave of heat, dark and fruity notes of prunes, brown sugar, and caramel emerge with real depth," noting customers call it "surprisingly flavorful and smooth for the proof." LoveScotch's tasting described "a rich, complex taste that dances on the palate with notes of molasses, caramel, and tropical fruits," with a nose "exuding a captivating aroma of oak, spice, and hints of burnt sugar." One Rum Ratings community reviewer, comparing it directly against the standard Hamilton 151 Demerara, offered a genuinely useful side-by-side take: "it does have a little of the Jamaican taste, but it is much, much smoother than the Demerara. I think I have found a new favorite. It is still strong, and will knock your socks off, but nice smooth taste." Another added: "very tasty. All the goodness and nearly all the heft of the original but with just a bit of Jamaican funk and complexity. As always, Ed nails it." This is genuinely purpose-built tiki bar rum, refined through real trial and error at one of the country's most respected tiki establishments — Float it on a Mai Tai, build a proper Zombie, or use it as the powerhouse base for any tropical cocktail that genuinely demands presence. Origins & Craftsmanship Hamilton False Idol Full Strength Rum was created through a collaboration between Ed Hamilton, founder of the Ministry of Rum, and Anthony Schmidt of False Idol, San Diego's acclaimed tiki bar. The two spent months tasting and refining the blend, ultimately settling on a formula of 85% aged Demerara rum sourced from Guyana and 15% heavy-bodied Jamaican pot still rum from the Worthy Park Estate — the same rum used across Hamilton's Jamaican-sourced expressions. Production is notably deliberate: the full-strength Guyanese Demerara component, at 154 proof, is blended with the Jamaican pot still rum at 170 proof, then slowly stirred together for 48 hours to allow genuine integration between the two distinct rum traditions, before the finished blend is diluted to its final 151-proof bottling strength using filtered well water at the Five & 20 Distillery in Westfield, New York. Hamilton Rums, more broadly, are sourced from Demerara Distillers Ltd., located on the banks of the Demerara River in Guyana. Bottled at 75.5% ABV / 151 proof. Rum Ratings community (extended review): "I have been using the Hamilton Demerara 151, but decided to try the False Idol as it is a blend with a little Jamaican rum (which I love). It does have a little of the Jamaican taste, but it is much, much smoother than the Demerara. I only bought this as it was the only Hamilton 151 the store had on hand, but I think I have found a new favorite. It is still strong, and will knock your socks off, but nice smooth taste." Rum Ratings community (alternate review): "75.5% ABV. 85% Guyanese, 15% Jamaican (Worthy Park). Very tasty. All the goodness and nearly all the heft of the original but with just a bit of Jamaican funk and complexity. I regret that I just re-upped on the standard 151, and missed an opportunity to grab this one. As always, Ed nails it." Tasting Profile Nose Rich and deep, with dried fruit and dark chocolate leading, joined by a touch of funk, oak, spice, and hints of burnt sugar. Palate Molasses, caramel, and tropical fruit carry the entry, with prunes and brown sugar emerging behind an initial wave of heat, developing real depth and complexity from the Jamaican pot still component. Finish Deceptively smooth given the proof, closing with lingering dried fruit, dark chocolate, and a persistent, gentle funk — genuinely more refined than the standard Hamilton 151 Demerara, per direct comparison.
