Haleakala Copperleaf

Haleakala Copperleaf (Acalypha wilkesiana 'Haleakala')Haleakala Copperleaf is a bold, tropical-looking shrub grown for richly colored leaves that keep working when flowers are not the point. Its warm copper, bronze, and red tones add instant depth to beds and containers, especially in summer heat. The plant fills in quickly, creating a full, leafy presence that makes a space feel finished. If you want dramatic foliage color with a lush, layered look, this one delivers fast impact. Distinctive FeaturesThis cultivar is prized for large, serrated leaves with a mix of coppery bronze and reddish tones that can deepen with brighter light and warm weather. The habit is upright and bushy, and pinching or light trimming encourages denser branching and a more compact outline. Flowers are typically insignificant compared to the foliage, so the color show comes from leaves and new growth. In warm climates it functions as an evergreen shrub, while in cooler areas it is often used as a seasonal accent in containers. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best foliage color in full sun and some relief from harsh exposure in very hot inland sites. Soil: Moist, well-drained soil with organic matter, and avoid soggy conditions. Water: Medium, keep consistently moist and do not allow the root zone to dry out for long periods. USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 10 to 11. Mature Size: Typically 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide in warm climates, and often smaller in containers. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a foliage centerpiece in a bed or large container where the copper and red tones can stand out from a distance. Containers: Plant in a large pot to bring tropical color to patios, pool areas, and entryways. Mixed Borders: Pair with green evergreens or chartreuse foliage plants to amplify contrast and add depth. Warm-Season Color Blocks: Mass in sunny beds for a sustained foliage color display through the hottest months. Backdrop Planting: Use behind lower annuals and perennials to add height, fullness, and rich color. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Pinch or trim stems as needed to control size and encourage a fuller, bushier plant. Watering: Water regularly, especially in containers, because drought stress can cause rapid leaf drop. Feeding: Feed during active growth to support strong leaf size and color, especially for potted plants. Temperature: Protect from cold and frost, and move containers to shelter in cool weather if needed. Placement: Shelter from strong wind to reduce leaf tearing and keep the plant looking clean. Why Choose Haleakala Copperleaf? High-Impact Foliage: Copper and red leaf tones create strong color without relying on blooms. Fast Fill-In: Quick growth builds a full, leafy presence that makes plantings look complete. Container Star: Performs well in pots where color and texture can be featured up close. Season-Long Interest: Foliage stays showy through warm weather and keeps beds visually active. Design Versatility: Works as a tropical accent, a border filler, or a bold contrast plant in mixed schemes. Haleakala Copperleaf is best used where its foliage can do the heavy lifting, adding color, texture, and lush scale in one plant. Give it consistent moisture, good drainage, and enough light to bring out its richest tones. In beds or containers, it provides a dramatic, foliage-forward look that instantly elevates the planting.
