Gun Roving

Gun Roving Overview  This versatile roving chops cleanly and wets rapidly and completely. It demonstrates good laminate properties and wet strength retention. It is an excellent choice for mold and radii conformance, rolls out easily, and can be used in many different chopper guns and transfer systems. Gun roving is designed for use with resins systems to create high-strength, low-weight composites. Feed through our #1171-A Air Chopper Gun and use in spray up systems, either filled and unfilled. Add directional reinforcement to other structures. Use with a filament winder to create tubes, filament winding, fillets, and spar wing reinforcement. It is typically used with polyester or vinyl ester resin. Yields approximately 205 yards per pound. What is Gun Roving? What is Gun Roving? Gun Roving (#526) from Fibre Glast is a versatile fiberglass roving that chops cleanly and wets rapidly and completely. It demonstrates good laminate properties and wet strength retention.. It is an excellent choice for mold and radii conformance, rolls out easily, and can be used in many different chopper guns and transfer systems. Gun roving is designed for use with resin systems to create high-strength, low-weight composites. Why Choose Gun Roving for Composite Fabrication? Gun roving provides one of the fastest methods for building composite thickness over large areas. When fed through a chopper gun like the Fibre Glast #1171-A Air Chopper Gun, fiberglass gun roving is fed through the back of the gun in a long continuous piece. An adjustable blade assembly controls the size of the fiberglass strands, and the trigger controls the speed at which these strands are ejected from the gun and onto the mold surface. Resin is then applied by brush, roller, or sprayed on using a cup gun. The spray-up process allows fabricators to quickly cover large surfaces with fiberglass reinforcement, and the #1171-A will deposit the equivalent of one layer of 1 oz mat onto a vertical surface without fall-off before wet-out. The roving chops cleanly and wets rapidly and completely when resin is applied. Beyond chopper gun applications, gun roving is also a versatile standalone reinforcement. It can be used to add directional reinforcement to other structures by laying continuous strands along load paths. It can be used with a filament winder to create tubes, filament winding, fillets, and spar wing reinforcement. The physical properties of composites are fiber dominant, meaning that when resin and fiber are combined, their performance remains most like the individual fiber properties. Gun roving provides fiberglass reinforcement in a continuous strand format that can be directed exactly where strength is needed. What Are the Best Applications for Gun Roving? Gun roving is commonly used in spray-up systems for rapid mold and part build-up, either filled and unfilled. The spray-up process is ideally suited to quick mold or part build-up once the first layer or two of finer surfacing materials are in place. Fiberglass is the all-purpose reinforcement choice in the composites industry, and gun roving provides one of the most efficient methods of applying it. It is typically used with polyester or vinyl ester resin. Yields approximately 205 yards per pound. Gun roving can also be used with the #1171-A Air Chopper Gun to chop fibers at lengths ranging from 4" down to 5/16", depending on blade number and placement. For mold construction, gun roving can be combined with other reinforcements such as #250 Chopped Strand Mat and #223 Woven Roving to create sturdy, durable molds. How Should Gun Roving Be Used for Best Results? Feed gun roving through the #1171-A Air Chopper Gun for spray-up applications. Use a fiberglass saturation roller after applying roving and resin to remove trapped air and ensure complete wet-out. It is typically used with polyester or vinyl ester resin. How is Gun Roving Packaged? Available in 50-pound rolls (#526-A), cases of four rolls (#526-B), and skids of 12 rolls (#526-C). The bulk packaging options allow fabricators to match their purchase to project scale. Fibre Glast is committed to ensuring that every product is First Quality and manufactured to the highest standards, so that you can expect consistent properties and handling characteristics every time you order.
