Think of the way light moves through a sheer curtain on a summer afternoon — how the fabric catches and releases it, how the folds multiply something simple into something almost liquid. There's a reason we stop and watch. Pleating does something to a surface that flatness never can. It introduces time, rhythm, repetition. It turns material into motion. Sarah Cavender has been working in wire cloth — actual woven metal mesh — from her studio in Oxford, Alabama for decades, developing a craft that sits somewhere between sculpture, textile art, and jewelry. She pleats brass wire cloth by hand, folding and shaping each piece the way a couturier works with silk, coaxing structure and softness out of a material most people would never think to drape. The result is metal that behaves like fabric, catching light along every ridge and valley, shifting between warm brass and cool aqua depending on the angle. These hoop earrings are 1¼ inches in diameter, scaled to frame the face without competing with it. The pleated wire cloth is hand-formed from brass with a mixed-metal finish that lets silver and aqua tones play across the surface. At 5 grams per earring, they carry a satisfying, grounded weight — enough to swing gently when you turn your head, enough to remind you they're there. The ear wires are hypoallergenic. Every pair is shaped individually, which means no two are perfectly identical. That's not a flaw. That's the whole point. Handcrafted by Sarah Cavender Metalworks in Oxford, Alabama.
