The McLaren F1 became a legend for redefining performance and design. It remains the last road-based, series-produced car to win Le Mans outright and, even today, three decades later, still holds the title as the world’s fastest naturally aspirated road car. This project is a one-of-a-kind collaboration. The GTR 02R timepiece combines authentic McLaren F1 DNA with Swiss horological craft, designed and engineered from scratch to celebrate the engineering excellence, legendary status, and racing achievements of McLaren F1 GTR chassis 02R. Read less Read more Born as the ultimate road car Racing Was Inevitable With the McLaren F1, the goal was not to build a race car. It was to create the ultimate road car. A machine engineered without compromise, built around innovation, purity, and performance at a level the automotive world had never seen before. The result was nothing short of revolutionary. The McLaren F1 became one of the first sports cars to use a full carbon-fibre monocoque body and chassis structure. It combined groundbreaking engineering with obsessive attention to detail, from its central driving position and dihedral doors to its gold-lined engine bay and naturally aspirated BMW V12 engine. In 1998, the McLaren F1 set an official top speed record of 240.1 mph / 386.4 km/h, making it the fastest naturally aspirated production car in the world, a title it still holds today. But what makes the McLaren F1 truly extraordinary is not only what it achieved on the road. It is also what it achieved when it was taken racing. Despite being conceived as the ultimate road car, the F1’s potential on track was impossible to ignore. Gordon Murray initially resisted the idea of turning it into a race car, but with the persistence of figures such as Ray Bellm and Ron Dennis, the McLaren F1 GTR was born. The McLaren F1 GTR went on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright in 1995, making the F1 the last road-legal, series-produced sports car to claim overall victory at Le Mans. It also became a dominant force in GT racing, proving that a car originally designed for the road could rise to the very top of endurance motorsport. That legacy began almost immediately. At the 1995 4 Hours of Jerez, the first race entered by the McLaren F1 GTR, Ray Bellm and Maurizio Sandro Sala took overall victory, securing McLaren’s first sports car racing win in more than two decades. With only 106 examples of the McLaren F1 produced across all versions, it remains one of the most exclusive and celebrated cars ever created. Today, examples have been known to sell for more than $20 million, but its value goes far beyond rarity. The McLaren F1 is remembered as one of the greatest achievements in automotive history. A car built to be the ultimate road car. A car that became a Le Mans winner. A car that, more than three decades later, still stands as one of the purest expressions of performance, engineering, and ambition ever put on four wheels. You get the McLaren F1 GTR. Chassis 02R became one of the clearest proofs of what the F1 platform was capable of. As the first McLaren F1 GTR customer car, chassis 02R was delivered to Ray Bellm and GTC Motorsport for the 1995 Global GT Series. Bellm was not just a driver in the story of the F1 GTR. He was one of the key figures who helped instigate the programme, convincing McLaren that the F1 had the potential to become a world-class GT racer. Once 02R arrived on track, the result was immediate. At the 1995 4 Hours of Jerez, the first race for the McLaren F1 GTR, Ray Bellm and Maurizio Sandro Sala took overall victory, giving McLaren its first sports car racing win in more than two decades. It was the beginning of a remarkable debut season, with 02R going on to win six races during the 1995 season, including the Suzuka 1000km in the legendary Ueno Clinic livery, where Masanori Sekiya, winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, joined Bellm and Sala behind the wheel to secure another victory for 02R. Across its racing career, the McLaren F1 GTR chassis 02R became known as the most victorious F1 GTR in history, with Ray Bellm behind the wheel for every one of its wins. That connection is what makes 02R so special. It is not just a McLaren F1 GTR. It is the car that helped launch the McLaren F1’s racing legacy. The car that won on debut. The car that carried Gulf colors at Le Mans. The car that was victorious in the legendary Ueno Clinic livery at Suzuka. Chassis 02R stands as one of the most important competition McLaren F1s ever built, its success inseparable from Ray Bellm’s role as both a driving force behind the programme and the man who turned its potential into victories. GTR 02R timepiece deep dive Take a closer look at the story behind the timepiece and the legacy it proudly honors Design references Watch a breakdown of the unique design references engineered into the GTR 02R. Why did REC develop this timepiece? A Decade of Expertise The McLaren F1 is legendary and often considered the world’s first hypercar. At REC, we exist at the intersection of two worlds: the love and nerdiness for iconic vehicles, and the passion for watches. Simply put, we wouldn’t be satisfied until we found a way to honor it. For more than a decade, we’ve been honoring icons, transforming the DNA of history’s finest machines into timepieces. Our track record includes Ayrton Senna’s F1 Lotus 98T, the legendary Porsche 956, and the first production GT40 car ever – alongside drift cars, spy planes, WWII aircraft, movie cars, off-roaders, and famous sports cars. Ultimately, we found a way. Even though any McLaren F1 is a rarity, we raised the stakes by tracking down a GTR. We did the impossible by securing material from chassis 02R, the most victorious F1 GTR in racing history. We began discussions with Ray Bellm, an endurance racing champion widely viewed as a driving force behind the F1 GTR program. We explored how to perfect a timepiece that would honor McLaren F1 GTR 02R, and before we knew it, the GTR 02R project was born. Ray is responsible for chassis 02R’s title as the most successful F1 GTR ever built. He secured all of its wins himself, making this collaboration truly unique.
