Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) | Reblooming | Zones 3–9

Lime Green to White Blooms, Spring Through FallGrin and Tonic™ Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) is a standout reblooming smooth hydrangea that delivers something most hydrangeas can’t: a continuous parade of blooms from late spring all the way through fall. Its large, mophead flower clusters emerge in a distinctive chartreuse-lime green, then mature to crisp white as the season progresses — a color combination that works beautifully in both fresh and dried arrangements. Compact enough for small gardens and containers, yet bold enough to anchor a mixed border. Why Gardeners Choose Grin and Tonic™ True rebloomer — blooms on both old and new wood, so it flowers continuously from late spring through fall rather than just once in summer Distinctive lime-green-to-white color progression — chartreuse buds open to lime green, then mature to white; stunning in the garden and as cut or dried flowers Exceptional cold hardiness — hardy to zone 3; one of the most cold-tolerant hydrangeas available Compact, tidy habit — naturally mounded form stays 3–4 ft; doesn’t flop or sprawl like some smooth hydrangeas Blooms on new wood — pruning mistakes won’t cost you a season of flowers; cut back hard in late winter for vigorous new growth Pollinator magnet — large flower heads attract butterflies and beneficial insects throughout the bloom season Hardiness & Growing Zones USDA Hardiness Zones: 3–9 Zones 3–4: Fully cold-hardy; one of the best hydrangeas for northern climates; dies back to the ground in harsh winters but regrows vigorously from the roots each spring Zones 5–6: Ideal conditions; strong, vigorous growth with prolific reblooming from late spring through fall Zones 7–8: Thrives with morning sun and afternoon shade; avoid full western sun exposure in the hottest climates to prevent wilting and bloom fade Zone 9: Grow in partial shade; provide consistent moisture during summer heat; mulch heavily to keep roots cool Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade (morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal in zones 7+) Soil: Moist, well-drained; rich in organic matter; consistent moisture produces the largest, most prolific blooms Mature size: 3–4 ft tall × 3–4 ft wide Bloom time: Late spring through fall (May–October in most zones) Flower color: Lime green → white (does not change color based on soil pH, unlike bigleaf hydrangeas) Planting & Care TipsPlant in moist, well-drained soil with good organic matter. Water deeply and consistently — smooth hydrangeas are thirsty plants and will wilt dramatically in drought, though they recover quickly with water. Mulch 2–3 inches around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool. Fertilize once in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges — cut stems back to 12–18 inches or to the ground for the most vigorous new growth and largest blooms. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued reblooming. Available Sizes 2 Gallon — well-rooted young plant; great value for mass planting 3 Gallon — most established size; faster to full bloom display
