Grey Singer

Description: The Grey Singer (Crithagra leucopygius), also known as the White-rumped Seedeater, Grey canary, or White-Rumped Serin, is a species of finch in the Fringillidae family. It is found in the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, and Uganda. Its natural habitat is dry savanna. The Grey singer was formerly placed in the genus Serinus but phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences found that the genus was polyphyletic. The genus was therefore split and a number of species including the white-rumped seedeater were moved to the resurrected genus Crithagra Swainson 1827. The Grey Singer has one of the most melodious voices of all the finches available to aviculturists in Australasia.
