Great Escapes: Greece

Greece, the land of gods and scholars and the birthplace of democracy and Western philosophy, is one of the world’s most beloved destinations—offering far more than islands and beaches. In this Great Escapes edition, Angelika Taschen presents a journey through the country’s most beautiful hotels, complemented by stunning photography as well as book and film recommendations. The voyage travels from the mountains of Macedonia in the north to the Peloponnese, home to mythical places such as Corinth, Sparta, and Olympia, and onward to the larger and smaller island groups of the south. Along the way, she opens the doors to extraordinary stays including Imaret in Kavala, set in a former Ottoman complex; Tainaron Blue Retreat, a secluded former defense tower in the Mani; and The Windmill, a converted windmill on Kimolos in the Cyclades. Legendary luxury hotels such as Eagles Palace in Halkidiki and Poseidonion Grand Hotel on Spetses are featured alongside charming B+Bs like Guesthouse Mazaraki in Mystras and Mèlisses on Andros, run by food blogger Allegra Pomilio. The itinerary continues to iconic islands with hotels such as Mystique on Santorini and Soho Roc House on Mykonos, as well as remote gems like Mediterraneo on Kastelorizo, Greece’s southeastern outpost near the Turkish coast. The book also highlights striking architectural and design concepts, including The Rou Estate on Corfu, the minimalist Olea All Suite Hotel on Zakynthos, and Ammos on Crete, where every piece of furniture is unique and new eccentric designs are added each year. The journey is enriched by Greece’s fresh, healthy cuisine, crystal-clear seas, warm hospitality, and unforgettable sunsets.
