Grand Voyage – Large Mixed Media Assemblage with Vintage Maps

GRAND VOYAGE - Where Every Destination Is Possible Embarking on a journey through time and across continents, "Grand Voyage" stands as a testament to the traveler's spirit and the stories collected along the way. This expansive mixed media assemblage, measuring 24" x 36" x 2" (61 cm x 91.5 cm x 5 cm), is the largest piece in my collection, thoughtfully crafted to encapsulate the essence of global exploration. A Tapestry of Global Memories At the heart of "Grand Voyage" lies a richly textured canvas dominated by a world map, symbolizing the vastness of our planet and the myriad experiences it offers. The map is adorned with complementary hues and layered textures, inviting viewers to trace journeys both real and imagined. Artifacts of Adventure Lower Canvas: Upcycled, textured corrugate serves as the backdrop for an open roll of medium format film, from which emerges a resin set Cuban currency. This element signifies the unexpected treasures found in travel. Adjacent is a handcrafted, textured metal piece crowned with a fleur de lys bottle cap, blending artistry with found objects. Upper Canvas: This section features travel-themed graphics and text, enhanced with a crackle finish to evoke a sense of antiquity. A vintage vellum envelope rests beneath a copper sliding plate, which, when moved, reveals a stereographic image of Ancient Rome, connecting past civilizations with contemporary exploration. Encaustic Collage of Cultural Ephemera Beneath the central canvas, a collage sealed with encaustic wax showcases a curated collection of global mementos: Vintage Postcards: Snapshots of distant locales, capturing moments frozen in time. Ephemera: Assorted paper artifacts, including a textbook cover and a stereograph photo slide, each narrating its own tale of discovery. These elements intertwine to celebrate the myriad places awaiting exploration. Encasing this narrative is a solid wood frame, treated with multiple layers of wood stain and sealed to harmonize with the artwork's palette, offering a window into the world of a traveler. SIZE: 24" x 36" x 2" (61cm x 91.5cm x 5cm) Special Care for Encaustic Artwork... Encaustic artwork is created with a combination of beeswax (note for those who are allergic) and damar resin. This art form has existed for centuries, but because of the natural properties of the wax it does require to be displayed out of direct sunlight in a temperature controlled environment.
