Royal Gramma - Caribbean

Gramma loreto The Royal Gramma Basslet, also known as the Fairy Basslet, is a small, vibrant reef fish prized for its striking coloration and captivating behavior. Adults display a deep purple to violet body that transitions into a bright yellow tail, with a small black spot on the front of the dorsal fin. This species often hovers beneath overhangs or within reef caves, adding a dynamic and visually engaging presence to the aquarium. Royal Gramma Basslets typically grow to about 3 inches (7.5 cm), making them a manageable and attractive choice for marine hobbyists. In the wild, they inhabit shallow reefs of the western Atlantic, including the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the Caribbean, favoring shaded or dimly lit areas at depths of 1–60 meters. They are generally shy when first introduced to open spaces but become more confident in well-structured aquariums with ample hiding places. In the aquarium, Royal Gramma Basslets thrive in tanks with plenty of live rock, caves, and crevices that mimic their natural habitat. They are carnivorous and require a diet of finely chopped fresh or frozen marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, fish, and squid, ideally fed multiple times daily. Considered reef-safe, Royal Gramma Basslets do not harm corals or invertebrates. With proper care, their vivid coloration, small size, and engaging behavior make them a rewarding addition for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists.
