Gorgonian

Gorgonian Coral (Sea Fan Coral) Gorgonian Corals, commonly known as Sea Fan Corals, are among the most elegant and natural-looking corals available for reef aquariums. Their intricate branching structure, colorful polyps, and graceful swaying motion create a dynamic display that closely resembles a thriving tropical reef. Available in stunning shades of purple, yellow, orange, red, pink, and tan, Gorgonians add height, texture, and movement that few other corals can match. Native to tropical reefs throughout the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific, Gorgonians grow in a wide variety of branching and fan-shaped forms. Many of the species commonly kept in aquariums are photosynthetic and flourish under moderate to high lighting, while others are non-photosynthetic and require regular target feeding. Their unique growth habits make them ideal for creating vertical accents and adding depth to reef aquascapes. Gorgonians thrive in mature reef aquariums with stable water chemistry, moderate to strong, turbulent water flow, and adequate lighting appropriate for the species. Strong water movement helps keep their tissues clean and encourages excellent polyp extension. Photosynthetic varieties obtain much of their nutrition from zooxanthellae algae while also benefiting from occasional feedings of phytoplankton and fine coral foods. With proper placement and care, Gorgonians develop into stunning colonies that provide natural beauty and constant motion, making them excellent centerpiece corals for mixed reefs and Caribbean biotope aquariums.
