Goonch Catfish / Bagarius yarrelli

Common Name: Goonch Catfish Scientific Name: Bagarius yarrelli Other Names: Giant Devil Catfish, Giant Bagarius The Goonch Catfish is a large and formidable freshwater fish, known for its massive size and unique appearance. It has a broad, flat head with a wide mouth and sharp teeth, suited for a predatory lifestyle. The body is elongated and muscular, with a dark, mottled coloration that provides excellent camouflage in its natural riverine habitat. Habitat and Distribution: Bagarius yarrelli is native to the river systems of South Asia, particularly the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Mekong basins. It inhabits fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters, often in deep river channels and pools. Size and Lifespan: The Goonch Catfish is one of the largest catfish species, capable of reaching over 6 feet in length and weighing several hundred pounds. In the wild, they have a long lifespan, but their life expectancy in captivity can vary depending on care and conditions. Diet and Behavior: Goonch Catfish are apex predators in their ecosystem, feeding on fish, crustaceans, and occasionally larger prey like birds or small mammals. In an aquarium setting, they require a diet of large, meaty foods, such as whole fish, large chunks of seafood, and specialized large-predator pellets or sticks. Breeding and Reproduction: Breeding the Goonch Catfish in captivity is extremely rare and not well-documented. They are believed to spawn in flowing water, where the fertilized eggs drift until hatching. Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements: Given their enormous size, Goonch Catfish are not suitable for home aquariums. They require large public aquariums or zoo environments with thousands of gallons of water, powerful filtration systems, and ample space to accommodate their size and swimming needs. Ideal Tank Mates: Due to their predatory nature and massive size, keeping Goonch Catfish with other fish is not advisable, as they may prey on smaller tank mates. Difficulty Level: Advanced/Expert. Their massive size, specialized dietary needs, and habitat requirements make them suitable only for experienced professionals in large aquatic facilities. Water Parameters: Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C) pH: 6.5-7.5 General Hardness (GH): 8-12 dGH Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-8 dKH Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrite: 0 ppm Nitrate: <20 ppm Additional Information: The Goonch Catfish's reputation as a fearsome predator has contributed to its notoriety and fascination among fish enthusiasts. They are a challenging species to keep due to their size and environmental needs. Their presence in a natural ecosystem is a sign of a healthy river environment, but they are not commonly seen due to their elusive nature.
