Goldenseal Rhizomes

Hydrastis canadensis Goldenseal — Now Available as Live Rootlets for Immediate Planting.  Goldenseal is an herb native to the Eastern Appalachian Mountains and Southeastern Canada. Wild populations thrive in mixed deciduous forests, where large parasol-like leaves shade the forest floor. This woodland botanical produces a slow-growing rhizome rich in bright yellow berberine—a compound historically valued in both American and European medicine for its potent antimicrobial properties. The knobby, golden rhizomes are highly prized, as few other plants produce similar compounds and the roots are commonly harvested for use in tinctures or capsules. Due to their high value and limited availability, goldenseal has been overharvested, placing significant pressure on wild populations. You can help protect this important species by stewarding your own patch.  Goldenseal is also striking in the garden, with its umbrella-like leaves, delicate white flowers, and bright red berries in the fall. As a perennial, it will naturalize and spread when grown in the right conditions. Plants mature in 3 to 5 years, at which point portions of the root can be harvested while replanting the remainder to encourage regrowth. Over time, clumps of rhizomes can be divided and expanded. Hardy in zones 3–8.   Goldenseal rootlets ship in November for immediate planting. Order early for best availability. Detailed planting instructions are included with each order and may be obtained below. Available only within the contiguous US.
