Golden Pothos ‘Epipremnum aureum’

T he Golden Pothos, known as Epipremnum aureum, is one of the world’s most popular and easiest-to-grow houseplants, loved for its beautiful trailing vines, glossy heart-shaped leaves, and striking green-and-gold variegation.  Its cascading growth habit makes it an ideal hanging plant, perfect for shelves, hanging baskets, plant stands, or training up a moss pole for a lush vertical display indoors. Celebrated for its tough, resilient, and easy-care nature, this Pothos plant thrives in a wide range of indoor conditions, making it a favorite for both beginners and experienced plant lovers. It tolerates occasional missed watering, adapts well to different light levels, and rewards even minimal care with fast, vigorous growth, one reason it has remained a timeless indoor plant favorite.  Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, the Golden Pothos naturally climbs trees and spreads along the forest floor using its aerial roots. This explains its impressive versatility indoors; it can be grown as a trailing hanging plant, trained to climb supports, or even grown in water, making it one of the most adaptable houseplants available. One of the reasons Golden Pothos is so loved is its instantly recognizable, lush, cascading vines and glossy, heart-shaped leaves marbled with vibrant shades of green and gold.  Whether displayed as a dramatic hanging plant, allowed to trail elegantly from a shelf, or trained to climb a moss pole, this versatile beauty adds a bold tropical feel to any indoor space. Its year-round evergreen foliage ensures continuous color and texture, making it one of the most rewarding houseplants to grow. This fast-growing, beginner-friendly houseplant can reach up to 10 feet long indoors and spread around 6 feet wide with proper care, creating an impressive living curtain of foliage.  In its native tropical habitat, it can climb trees and structures to astonishing heights of 40 feet, producing much larger leaves as it matures, one of the many reasons growers love training it vertically indoors.  Cultural Significance & Feng Shui Benefits  Golden Pothos is often called a “Money Plant” or “Lucky Plant” in many cultures and is highly valued in Feng Shui, where it is believed to attract positive energy, prosperity, and balance into the home.  Integrating a Golden Pothos into your workspace or home entryways offers several key benefits: Wealth & Prosperity: It is believed to attract prosperity and wealth, which is why it is often placed in homes, offices, and workspaces as a symbol of financial growth and success. Chi Balancing: It is thought to encourage positive energy flow (Chi), especially when positioned near entryways, living rooms, or office desks to create a more balanced environment. Symbol of Resilience: Its ability to shrug off occasional missed waterings and thrive in less-than-ideal conditions makes it a timeless emblem of renewal and adaptability. Functional Decor: It is also valued as a natural air-purifying plant, making it both a meaningful decorative plant and a functional addition to homes and workplaces. One of the most unique things about Golden Pothos is its incredible versatility; it can thrive in soil or water, tolerate a wide range of light conditions, trail or climb depending on your style, and remain one of the easiest houseplants to care for, even for first-time plant owners.  When and How to Water Your Pothos Plant  Golden Pothos is moderately drought-tolerant but prefers consistent moisture, making it important to water regularly while allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot. This hardy houseplant is forgiving, but overwatering remains the most common issue. The best thing about your pothos plant is that it will naturally droop to let you know when it needs water. Water the leaves as soon as they start to droop, but don't wait until they dry out or shrivel.  Your Golden Pothos prefers evenly moist soil with slight drying between waterings, requiring watering every 7–10 days during the growing season (March–September) and every 10–14 days in the dormant season (October–February) using moderate amounts of water.  In spring and summer, water thoroughly until excess drains out, then allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering again. Warmer temperatures and active growth mean the plant will use water more efficiently during this period.  In fall and winter, reduce watering as growth slows down. The plant requires less moisture during this time, so allowing the soil to dry out a bit more helps prevent root rot and keeps the plant healthy.  Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Golden Pothos Plant  When growing indoors, your pothos plant thrives best in bright, indirect light for about 6–8 hours daily, though it can also tolerate low light conditions. It adapts well to offices and low-light rooms, but brighter light enhances its signature golden variegation and promotes faster growth. When exposed to too much shade, variegated plants lose their leaf pattern and revert to all-green foliage. Moving them to brighter light usually restores the variegation.  When growing outdoors, plants should be placed in partial shade where they receive 3–5 hours of filtered or indirect sunlight while being protected from harsh direct sun. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may cause the variegation to fade.  Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs  The Golden Pothos prefers a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged. A standard indoor potting mix with added perlite works well, helping maintain proper aeration and preventing root issues.  A light, airy mix supports healthy root development and allows excess water to drain efficiently, which is essential for this trailing plant. Ideally, you want to use our specialized potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your pothos plant to thrive.   When it comes to fertilizing, it benefits from light feeding during the growing season. Apply a balanced liquid NPK fertilizer once a year in spring to support lush foliage growth. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant months (October–February), as the plant’s growth slows and excess nutrients can build up in the soil.  How to Grow Best Indoors as a Houseplant  The Golden Pothos is one of the easiest and most adaptable houseplants, thriving in a wide range of indoor conditions and requiring minimal care. Its trailing vines make it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or as a climbing plant with support. The plant should be kept in temperatures between 65°F and 85°F for healthy, steady growth. It can tolerate low to bright indirect light, but brighter light helps it grow faster and keeps its variegation strong. The plant should be watered when the topsoil becomes dry, avoiding both overwatering and complete dryness. It grows well in normal household humidity, although slightly higher humidity helps it look fuller and healthier. The plant should be kept away from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F to prevent stress and damage. Hardiness Zones & More  In the United States, Golden Pothos is primarily grown as an indoor plant, but it can be grown outdoors year-round in USDA zones 10–12. It thrives in warm, tropical, and subtropical climates where frost is not a concern. This plant adapts well to a wide range of humidity levels, from average indoor conditions to higher humidity environments. While it tolerates drier air, increased humidity can promote faster and healthier growth. Outdoors, it performs best in shaded or partially shaded areas such as patios or under trees. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can burn the leaves, while filtered light helps maintain its vibrant variegation.  Wildlife – Pothos Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators  Golden Pothos rarely flowers, especially when grown indoors, so it does not typically attract pollinators in home environments. In its natural habitat, its flowers may attract small insects, but the plant is primarily valued for its foliage rather than blooms.  According to the ASPCA, Epipremnum aureum is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation, drooling, and discomfort. It is, however, safe to touch and handle, making it ideal for domestic use.  How to Propagate Your Golden Pothos Vine  To propagate, choose a healthy vine and cut a section about 4–6 inches long, making sure it has at least 2–3 nodes (the small bumps where leaves and roots grow). Remove the lower leaves so the nodes are exposed, then place the cutting in a jar of water or directly into moist, well-draining soil. Keep it in a warm spot with bright, indirect light, and if using water, change it every few days to keep it fresh. Roots usually start forming within 1–3 weeks, and once they are a few inches long, you can transfer the cutting into soil and care for it like a mature plant.  Pro Tip If the lower part of your pothos looks bare, you can make the plant look fuller without cutting anything. Simply take the long vines and gently lay them on top of the soil in a circular shape inside the pot. You can lightly hold them in place using small paperclips or similar supports until they start rooting. Over time, these stems will grow into the soil and help make the plant look much thicker and healthier. How to Prune Your Golden Pothos for Fuller, Bushier Growth  Pruning your pothos plant helps control long vines, reduce legginess, and encourage a fuller, bushier plant when done during the growing season. Because they grow quickly, it can become sparse or leggy over time. Use clean, sharp scissors to trim the vines just below a node, as this encourages new growth and a fuller shape. Always leave at least two nodes on the vine so it can continue growing.  You can cut back long vines to your desired length, and the cuttings can also be used for propagation. Prune during spring and summer for best results, and avoid heavy pruning in fall and winter when growth slows down.  Key Takeaways The Pothos Epipremnum aureum is one of the best hanging houseplants, known for its long, trailing vines that instantly create a lush, green waterfall effect in any indoor space. It is perfect for growing in hanging baskets, shelves, or wall planters, and can also be trained to climb, making it extremely versatile for home décor. One of its most interesting features is its ability to thrive in almost any indoor condition, from low-light corners to bright indirect light, while still maintaining strong growth. It is famously fast-growing and easy to propagate, allowing you to turn a single plant into multiple new plants within weeks. Golden Pothos is also known for its air-purifying qualities, helping improve indoor air quality while adding natural beauty to your space with minimal effort. Potting and Repotting Your Pothos Plant   Your Golden Pothos plant should be repotted every 1–2 years or when root-bound, using a well-draining pot and fresh soil to support healthy, continued growth. Choose a pot with drainage holes and a light, well-draining soil mix to prevent excess moisture. When repotting, gently remove the plant, loosen the roots slightly, and place it into a pot that is only one size larger to avoid overwatering issues. Repotting is best done in spring or early summer when the plant is actively growing, allowing it to adjust quickly and continue producing lush, trailing vines.  The Bottom Line  Overall, Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is one of the most versatile and easy-care houseplants, valued for its fast growth, adaptability, and attractive trailing foliage. It can thrive in a variety of indoor conditions and requires minimal maintenance, making it perfect for beginners and busy plant owners.
