God is Love Dodger Blue

1 John 4:8 in Focus “The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” This verse is one of the most profound declarations in Scripture. It doesn't just say God is loving—it says God IS love. Love is not merely a characteristic of God—it is His very nature. This means all of God's actions, commands, and plans flow from this core identity. Overview of 1 John Chapter 4 This chapter is often broken into three main sections: 1. Verses 1–6: Testing the Spirits John warns believers not to believe every "spirit" (or teaching), but to test whether they are from God. The key test: do they acknowledge that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh? This confronts false teachers (possibly early Gnostics) who denied Jesus’ humanity. Believers are of God and can overcome deception through the Spirit of truth. 2. Verses 7–21: God Is Love — The Command to Love This section contains the heart of John’s theology on love.  Key Themes: Love is from God: Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God (v.7). God = Love: Verse 8 makes it clear—if someone doesn’t love, they don’t truly know God. God showed His love by sending Jesus: Verses 9–10 speak of Jesus as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. We must love one another: If God loved us like that, we must reflect His love (v.11). God lives in us when we love: Love is a sign of God’s indwelling Spirit (v.12-13). Perfect love casts out fear: God’s love gives us confidence, not fear, in the day of judgment (v.18). Loving God means loving others: You can’t claim to love God while hating your brother or sister (v.20). Theological Significance of Verse 8 1 John 4:8 sits at the doctrinal center of John's message: Knowing God and loving others are inseparable. True relationship with God results in visible love toward others. Love is evidence of salvation and the presence of the Holy Spirit. This was radical in the early church when divisions, persecution, and false teaching created tension. John says love is the measure of authentic Christianity. Verse 8 in the Flow of the Chapter Verse 7 sets it up: “Let us love one another, for love is from God.” Verse 9–10 explains the how: through Jesus, God’s ultimate act of love. Verse 11 gives the application: we should love others because we’ve been loved. Verse 12–21 further develops the implications—love leads to confidence, freedom from fear, and is a command, not an option. What It Means for Us Today Christian love is not optional—it’s a sign of spiritual life. When we struggle to love, we should ask: Do I truly know God? Love is not just emotion, but action, modeled after Christ’s self-giving sacrifice. We are mirrors of God’s love in a fearful and divided world. Do you have any prayer request?
