Gilded Age Blouse Downloads for a 3-Year-Old Boy These Gilded Age Blouse Downloads reproduce Butterick Pattern 6764, an ornate little boys’ blouse patented in 1898. Sized for a three-year-old child with a 22-inch breast measurement, the design features a loose, gathered body, full bishop sleeves, fitted wristbands, turn-back cuffs, and a choice of sailor or round collar. The blouse may be made with or without the decorative box plait at the front. The included files provide several printing and projection options, allowing you to choose the format that best suits your equipment and workspace. This is the only size included with the download. Historical Context for the Gilded Age Blouse Downloads Butterick Pattern 6764 was patented in Great Britain on November 12, 1898, in the United States on September 5, 1899, and in Canada on October 13, 1899. The original cover describes the garment as a “Little Boys’ Blouse, with Sailor or Round Collar, and with or without the Box-Plait.” Butterick originally produced the design in nine age-based sizes, but this Past Patterns reproduction preserves the three-year-old size. A similar blouse appeared in the April 1903 issue of The Delineator. The period description discussed a softly pouched body drawn in at the waist, bishop sleeves, a large collar supported by a narrow band, turn-back cuffs, and full frills arranged in a jabot effect down the front. These details illustrate how the late-1890s silhouette continued into the opening years of the twentieth century. The Delineator, published by the Butterick Publishing Company, offered fashion illustrations, sewing advice, fabric recommendations, and patterns for home dressmakers. Digitized issues of this historically important periodical may be explored through Cornell University Library’s Home Economics Archive. The instruction booklet also includes illustrations from Butterick’s Metropolitan Fashions for Autumn and Winter 1894–95. These examples show related boys’ blouses worn with short trousers and skirted suits, providing useful visual context for assembling a complete Gilded Age child’s outfit. Design Options Included with the Gilded Age Blouse Downloads Pattern 6764 provides several options for changing the appearance and level of ornamentation: Sailor collar or round collar Collar edges that meet at the center front or remain open Applied box plait or plain hemmed front edges Round or pointed turn-back cuffs Optional insertion, edging, embroidery, or other period-style trimming The blouse body is softly gathered and drawn in at the waist with elastic or tape. Its bishop sleeves are gathered at the upper and lower edges before being joined to the wristbands and cuffs. These construction details produce the full, softly pouched silhouette shown in the original illustrations. Size and Finished Measurements This digital pattern contains the three-year-old size only, based on Butterick’s historical child proportions: Age: 3 years Breast: 22 inches Finished sleeve length under the arm: 8 3/4 inches Seam allowance: 3/8 inch included on edges requiring seaming Children’s sizing from the late nineteenth century may differ from modern sizing. Compare the pattern measurements with the intended wearer before printing and cutting. Experienced sewists may resize or alter the pattern if a different age or proportion is required. Fabric Requirements The original Butterick cover gives the following fabric requirements: 2 1/4 yards of 20-inch-wide fabric, or 1 3/8 yards of 27-inch-wide fabric, or 1 1/4 yards of 36-inch-wide fabric Optional period trimming requirements include: 5/8 yard of 18-inch-wide all-over embroidery for the collar and cuffs 1 5/8 yards of insertion 4 7/8 yards of edging Suggested fabrics include nainsook, lawn, linen, madras, chambray, piqué, gingham, percale, mercerized cotton, silk, lightweight serge, and flannel. Fine white cotton combined with insertion and edging creates an ornate dress blouse. Linen, gingham, chambray, or lightweight wool can be used for a more restrained period interpretation. Would you prefer a professionally printed full-size pattern? The printed version of Past Patterns 6764 is also available. Skill Level: 3/5 – Intermediate These Gilded Age Blouse Downloads receive a 3/5 difficulty rating because construction requires gathering the blouse body and bishop sleeves, setting full sleeves, applying a collar band, constructing cuffs and wristbands, and optionally adding a box plait, insertion, edging, or embroidery. The garment contains relatively few pattern pieces, but the authentic period directions are concise and do not provide modern step-by-step construction illustrations. Create a Gilded Age Child’s Outfit Use these Gilded Age Blouse Downloads for historical reenactment clothing, museum interpretation, theatrical costuming, heritage photography, or a carefully researched child’s special-occasion garment. The collar, cuff, plait, and trimming choices allow you to create either an elaborate formal blouse or a simpler period-inspired version. Copyright Past Patterns 1979–2026. All rights reserved.
