Whole Unpeeled Red Datterini Tomatoes

While the name of these tomatoes translates to “little date,” they might as well be called nature’s candy. These whole, unpeeled little tomatoes are naturally sweeter than your standard cherry tomato, with an oval shape and fewer seeds. They’re preserved in their own juice so you can use the whole can and get nothing but pure summer flavor. These datterini are so rich and sweet, they can be eaten right out of the can. Close your eyes, and you’ll feel like you’ve just picked a sun-ripened tomato right off the vine. These tiny tomatoes are so full of big flavor, they hardly need any cooking to give a burst of southern Italian sunshine in every bite. Choosing top-quality tomatoes like these is the ultimate embodiment of the Italian philosophy of cooking: selecting only the best ingredients—no matter how humble—and preparing them simply. With a can of these ultra-fresh, delicious tomatoes in your pantry, you’ll have peak tomato season at your fingertips all year round. Grown in the southern region of Puglia, datterini thrive in the intense heat (the region gets, on average, 2,500 hours of sun a year!), which is tempered by cool breezes from the surrounding Mediterranean Sea. Their natural sugars are concentrated by those long hours in the sun, giving these tomatoes a well-balanced flavor profile that sings with ripe sweetness.
