Stillness

An exploration of Japanese aesthetics through the lens of Norm Architects. Published by Gestalten, Stillness documents the studio’s long-standing engagement with Japanese culture, tracing a decade of visits across landscapes, architecture, and cultural sites. By juxtaposing images from Japan with Norm Architects’ own projects, the book highlights the shared principles that connect distinct design cultures—across architecture, interiors, and everyday objects—emphasizing materiality, restraint, and a deep sensitivity to place. Commentary from expert collaborators in both Japan and Scandinavia provides deeper insight into these ideas. Part travelogue, part reflection on practice, Stillness presents an ongoing dialogue between Japan and the studio’s work—an exploration of design shaped by observation, respect, and time.
