Basics Scientific Name: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi Family: Cichlidae Origin: Tank raised, species from South America Quick Facts Care Level: Moderate Temperament: Peaceful Lifespan: 3-5 years, possibly longer Water Conditions: 72-79° F, KH 0-10, pH 6.5-7.5 Maximum Size: 2.5"- 3" Diet: Omnivore Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons Overview The German Blue Ram is a color variant of the extremely popular Ram cichlid. The base color is silvery and covered in small, bright iridescent blue spots. The face and fins have varying degrees of yellow pigment. The body is short and stocky with a blunt snout, and the dorsal fin appears spiked, especially in males. Males are usually somewhat larger in size. They should be kept in an aquarium with adequate swimming space and will be happiest with plenty of cover in the form of live or fake plants. A sandy substrate will allow them to engage in sifting behavior. Hiding caves will make them more eager to spawn. Their water quality must always be excellent, as they are quite sensitive. A high quality filter and frequent partial water changes will help them to thrive. They can live in groups of their own species or with other peaceful cichlids, and will form monogamous pairs. Males may be territorial towards each other. When tending to eggs, both sexes may become aggressive. As omnivores, they will accept a wide variety of foods including both meaty preparations and vegetable matter in the form of high quality flakes, pellets, live and frozen food.
