Germain Robin XO Brandy 750ML is a California pot-still brandy distilled primarily from Pinot Noir grapes, bottled at 45.5% ABV (91 proof). Scoring 95 points from the Ultimate Spirits Challenge and earning a place on its Top 100 list in 2020, this expression has also collected Double Gold medals at both the 2024 ADI International Spirits Competition and the 2023 Craft Distillers Spirits Competition, plus a Grand Gold at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Its use of Pinot Noir as the dominant distillation grape—rather than the Ugni Blanc standard in Cognac—gives it a fruit-driven richness that has drawn serious comparisons to top-tier French XO bottlings. Quick Facts: ABV: 45.5% (91 proof)  |  Origin: California, USA  |  XO Brandy  |  Distillery: Germain-Robin Production & Heritage Germain-Robin Distillery, located in Mendocino County, California, established itself as one of America's most acclaimed brandy producers by applying traditional French distillation techniques to California-grown grapes. The XO is distilled exclusively in a Prulho Charentais copper pot still—the same alembic design used throughout the Cognac region—from a blend of approximately 70% Pinot Noir, with Colombard and Sémillon rounding out the balance. This reliance on Pinot Noir as a base spirit is exceptionally rare in brandy production worldwide and fundamentally shapes the XO's character, delivering a darker, more fruit-saturated profile than brandies built on neutral white-wine grapes. Tasting Notes Aroma: Fig, damson plum, and baked black grapes lead immediately, followed by layers of fig jam pastry, poached pear, and brown butter. A backdrop of cigar box and subtle oak emerges as the spirit opens in the glass. Taste: The entry is rich and sticky with dark fruit—dried cherry and plum dominate—before the mid-palate shifts toward dark chocolate, walnut, and oak vanillin. Honey and brown butter fill out the peak, while pink peppercorn and ginger provide a spiced counterpoint that keeps the sweetness balanced and engaging. Finish: Long and warming, with cinnamon, leather, and burnt sugar lingering well past each sip. A lift of citrus zest on the tail end prevents the finish from turning heavy, pulling the palate back toward freshness. How to Drink Germain Robin XO This brandy rewards patient sipping neat in a tulip glass at room temperature, allowing the Pinot Noir-driven aromatics to fully express themselves. A few drops of water can unlock additional fruit and spice complexity. For cocktails, the XO brings uncommon depth to a Sidecar, where its dried cherry and chocolate notes complement orange liqueur and fresh citrus; a Vieux Carré, where its weight and spice stand shoulder to shoulder with rye and sweet vermouth; and a Brandy Alexander, where its inherent richness amplifies the dessert character without relying on added sugar. The Pinot Noir base gives it a distinctly fruit-forward character that sets it apart from most traditional brandies. How does Germain Robin XO compare to French XO Cognac? Germain Robin XO uses the same Charentais pot-still distillation method as Cognac but builds its blend around Pinot Noir rather than Ugni Blanc, resulting in a darker, richer fruit profile. Reviewers have noted it holds a legitimate claim to rivalling XO Cognacs in quality while offering a distinctly Californian character. Is Germain Robin XO good for sipping neat? Germain Robin XO is ideally suited for neat sipping at room temperature, where its complex aromatics and layered palate have room to develop fully. Germain Robin XO is produced at the Germain-Robin Distillery in Mendocino County, California. The distillery uses a traditional French Prulho Charentais copper pot still to produce what many critics consider among the finest brandies made outside of France. What foods pair well with Germain Robin XO? Dark chocolate truffles complement the brandy's cocoa and dried cherry notes. Aged cheeses like Comté or Gruyère match its nutty, buttery character. Few American brandies have accumulated the level of critical recognition that Germain Robin XO commands—95 points from the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, Double Gold at the 2024 ADI International Spirits Competition, and Grand Gold at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition among them. The decision to distill primarily from Pinot Noir in a traditional Charentais pot still creates a brandy that genuinely challenges the assumption that world-class XO spirits can only come from southwestern France. At 45.5% ABV, it carries more intensity than many Cognacs bottled at 40%, allowing the dried fruit, chocolate, and spice notes to express themselves with real conviction. This is a brandy that has earned its reputation through competition results and production integrity rather than marketing narrative.
