Communications (Gentle Communications: Speaking from the Heart) ~ Subliminal

Gentle Communications: Speaking from the Heart — Have you ever listened to the way in which you communicate with others? Are you aware that your communications are often harsher than you intended? Have you ever stopped to think about the consequences of this? The fact is, harsh communications have become the norm and we see this in families, across the political arena, and in our children. Hard communications can demoralize the listener, suck away their self-esteem, cause them to give up on their own beliefs and dreams, and build up anger and resentment. This is no way to treat your loved ones, friends, colleagues, or any of the myriad of other people you interact with. We live at a time when it is easy for other’s to misunderstand the intent of our communication. It is also easy to become so invested in what we are trying to communicate that we sometimes may speak in bursts of rapid thundering speech, a characteristic of speech that implies hostility and/or anger. Unfortunately, we can find that we are our worst offender when addressing our loved ones. Speaking from the heart demonstrates our inner strength! Sometimes it is necessary to disagree or offer constructive criticism to others. When this occurs we should always remember to be doubly cautious of our rhetoric and delivery style. As Frank Clark put it, “Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man's growth without destroying his roots.” Have you ever said something to someone that you regretted? Have you ever tried to take the impact of a nasty verbal attack back? The fact is, episodes of this nature between people can be likened to a 1x4 board. Each time we speak harshly we drill a hole in the board. Given enough of these incidents and the board breaks or crumbles. When we stop and think about outbursts of a harsh nature, we almost always can find that they occur because we feel threatened, marginalized, disrespected, embarrassed, exposed, etc. In other words, we are fighting back with our speech. And when we reflect on these experiences we find they never succeed at anything short of pain. Positive outcomes are lost when our speech fails to be honest, gentle, and from the heart. Sometimes speaking from the heart feels as though it exposes our vulnerability but in reality it demonstrates our inner strength. In the words of Saint Francis de Sales, “Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength.” True self responsibility of course begins with you. Being a force for good in the world begins with the way in which you communicate. Gentle communications spread and air of love and peace. The more you work on making all of your communications gentle and loving, the more the positive effects ripple out across the world. Be the change you wish to see in the world.
