Generation Codex

This illuminated Latin text from the Stockholm Codex Aureus is St Matthew’s Gospel 1:18: Christi autem generatio sic erat: cum esset desponsata mater eius Maria Ioseph, antequam convenirent, inventa est in utero habens de Spiritu Sancto "Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost." The Old English script around the edges reads: "In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I, Earl Alfred, and my wife Werburg procured this book from the heathen invading army with our own money; the purchase was made with pure gold. And we did that for the love of God and for the benefit of our souls, and because neither of us wanted these holy works to remain any longer in heathen hands. And now we wish to present them to Christ Church to God's praise and glory and honour, and as thanksgiving for his sufferings, and for the use of the religious community which glorifies God daily in Christ Church; in order that they should be read aloud every month for Alfred and for Werburg and for Alhthryth, for the eternal salvation of their souls, as long as God decrees that Christianity should survive in that place. And also I, Earl Alfred, and Werburg beg and entreat in the name of Almighty God and of all his saints that no man should be so presumptuous as to give away or remove these holy works from Christ Church as long as Christianity survives there. Alfred Werburg Alhthryth their daughter" (Though not all of this is visible on the garment itself).Size guide   CHEST (inches) WAIST (inches) HIPS (inches) 2XS 34 ⅝ 28 ⅜ 35 ⅜ XS 36 ¼ 29 ⅞ 37 S 37 ¾ 31 ½ 38 ⅝ M 39 ⅜ 33 ⅛ 40 ⅛ L 42 ½ 36 ¼ 43 ¼ XL 45 ⅝ 39 ⅜ 46 ½ 2XL 48 ⅞ 42 ½ 49 ⅝ 3XL 52 45 ⅝ 52 ¾ 4XL 55 ⅛ 48 ⅞ 55 ⅞ 5XL 58 ¼ 52 59 6XL 61 ⅜ 55 ⅛ 62 ¼
