Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo'

Description Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues   Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' is a rare hybrid succulent created by crossing Gasteria and Haworthia species. It originated from horticultural breeding programs designed to develop compact, resilient houseplants suited to indoor growing.   It forms a tight compact rosette with thick, triangular leaves marked by white spotted patterns across their dark green surface. The leaves taper to soft points, creating a star-shaped silhouette. The smooth, nearly translucent leaf texture and dense rosette structure keep the plant well-proportioned for containers.   Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' occasionally produces small tubular flowers on slender stalks during warmer months, though it is primarily grown for its foliage. The plant tolerates dry air and can survive extended periods without watering.   Move it outside in summer with protection from direct rain and intense afternoon sun. It develops deep roots and requires a heavy pot for stability. It works well in terrariums and transitions easily between office LED lighting and covered outdoor spaces. It is pet-safe around cats and dogs.   Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' grows well in bright indirect light or medium light and adapts well to office LED fixtures.   Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings every 2–3 weeks.   Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' grows well in well-draining cactus and succulent potting mix with added perlite or pumice.   It prefers temperatures between 65–80°F and is not frost-tolerant below 32°F.   Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' is a slow-growing succulent that rarely needs fertilizing beyond diluted succulent fertilizer once or twice yearly.   It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11 and requires protection from frost below 32°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, southern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, southern Nevada, coastal Oregon, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi. Indoor cultivation allows gardeners in colder zones to enjoy this hybrid succulent as a houseplant with seasonal outdoor growing during warmer months. Q: How often should I water Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo'? A: During growing season, allow soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, extend the interval to once every 4–6 weeks. Q: Is it safe around pets? A: Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs. Q: What light conditions work best for Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' indoors? A: Place it near a bright window or in a room with medium light away from direct south-facing sun, which can scorch the leaves. Q: How fast does it grow? A: Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' grows slowly and maintains its compact rosette shape, producing occasional offsets over time. Q: Can Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' spend time outdoors? A: Yes, move it outside for summer but keep it out of direct rain and afternoon sun. Bring it inside before the first frost. Q: Why does it need a heavy pot? A: Gasterhaworthia 'Hippo' develops deep roots that need substantial pot weight for stability and proper drainage.
