"Funky But Chic" Flowy Racerback Tank

"Funky But Chic." David Johansen's 1978 solo debut and the song that defined post-Dolls swagger. After the New York Dolls imploded in 1977, David Johansen could have disappeared. Instead, he released a solo album that proved he was more than just the Dolls' frontman—he was a songwriter, a performer, and a New York City original. "Funky But Chic," the album's standout single, captured Johansen's ability to blend glam rock attitude with R&B groove, creating something that was both funky and chic, raw and polished, street and sophisticated. The 1978 album "David Johansen" was released on Blue Sky Records and featured fellow New York Doll Sylvain Sylvain, who co-wrote four songs including "Funky But Chic." The album was a critical success, voted the 10th best record of 1978 in The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll. While the New York Dolls had been proto-punk pioneers who influenced everyone from the Sex Pistols to the Ramones, Johansen's solo work showed he could evolve beyond punk's limitations. "Funky But Chic" was danceable, soulful, and sophisticated—proof that the guy who wore platform heels and lipstick with the Dolls could also write a killer R&B-influenced rock song.
