How to Replace an Ax Handle A. First, remove the old handle from the ax head by drilling or cutting away any remaining material. After the head is clear, select a replacement hickory handle and make sure it fits snugly in the ax head's eye. If needed, sand the handle to ensure a snug fit. To ensure a firm grip, insert the handle into the head and then expand it inside the eye using a wooden or metal wedge. In order to shield the handle from wear, lastly trim any extra wood and coat it with linseed oil. For more details, check out our “How to Hang an Axe Handle” instructional video Q. What is the Best Wood for an Axe Handle?  A. Because of its strength, flexibility, and ability to absorb shock, hickory is the best material to use for axe handles. Its natural fibers make it resistant to wear and breaking, reducing hand fatigue and making it perfect for heavy use.
