Full Size Dracaena Marginata Stump

Product Details Struggling to fill that spot in front of your window without losing the light? A Dracaena Marginata stump is made for it. Its trunk is the whole story: a thick, woody cane that twists and leans where it has grown, finished with a loose crown of slender leaves that arch out and catch the light. Every stump has grown its own way, so the one that arrives is yours alone, closer to a piece of living sculpture than another plant off a shelf. Sink into a chair and enjoy the thin shadows it throws across the wall late in the afternoon. Native to Madagascar, the Dracaena Marginata grows slowly and asks for very little, which makes it an easy plant to live with for years. Care Where is the best place to put a Dracaena Marginata? A Dracaena Marginata is happiest in bright, indirect light, so a spot near an east or west-facing window suits it well. It also handles lower light better than most dracaenas, which is why it holds up in the dim corners other statement plants would sulk in (it earns its spot in our low-light collection for that reason). Keep it out of harsh, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaf tips. Are Dracaena Marginata hard to take care of? A Dracaena Marginata is about as forgiving as large plants get. It shrugs off the odd missed watering, adapts to a range of light, and keeps its looks with very little fuss. If you have talked yourself out of a big plant before because you worried about keeping it alive, this is the one to start with. How often do you water a Dracaena Marginata? Water your Dracaena Marginata when the top 2 inches (5 cm) of soil feel dry, (usually every couple of weeks). It stores water in that thick trunk, so it would rather be a little too dry than too wet. In winter its growth slows and it needs even less, so check the soil first instead of watering on a schedule. If your tap water is heavily treated, filtered water keeps the leaf tips their cleanest green. Do you need to fertilize a Dracaena Marginata? A Dracaena Marginata only needs a light touch at feeding time. Give it a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month through spring and summer, then let it rest through fall and winter. How quickly does a Dracaena Marginata grow? A Dracaena Marginata grows at a slow, steady pace, adding up to a foot or so a year when the light is good. Brighter light nudges it along, while a dimmer corner simply slows things down. Will a Dracaena Marginata outgrow my space? Not for a long while, and never overnight. If yours ever does reach your ceiling, you can re-pot it and prune it back to your preferred height, and it will push out fresh growth from there.  Pet-friendly? The Dracaena Marginata is not pet-friendly, so it is best kept where cats and dogs can’t reach it. The whole plant contains saponins, which can upset an animal's stomach if they take a bite. If you share your home with determined nibblers, our pet-friendly collection has plenty of statement plants that are safe to live alongside them. Is the Dracaena Marginata safe for dogs? The Dracaena Marginata is not safe for dogs. If a dog chews the leaves, the saponins can bring on vomiting, drooling, low energy, and a lost appetite, so it is wise to keep this one on a plant stand or in a room your dog does not treat as their own. There is no risk to you in the same house - the worry is only if a pet eats it. Is the Dracaena Marginata poisonous to cats? The Dracaena Marginata is toxic to cats, and cats find those arching leaves especially hard to resist. On top of the upset stomach, a cat that nibbles it can get noticeably dilated pupils, so the safest plan is a high shelf or a cat-free room (and a little faith that yours will, for once, leave it be). Factoids Why is the Dracaena Marginata called a dragon tree? The name comes from the Greek word drakaina, meaning female dragon. When certain plants in this family are cut, they bleed a deep red resin that people once called dragon's blood, and the name stuck. Your Dracaena Marginata carries the lineage and a bit of the drama, minus the fire. Does a Dracaena Marginata help clean the air? The Dracaena Marginata was one of the plants NASA tested in its clean air study, where it helped filter common indoor pollutants like benzene and formaldehyde. A single plant will not overhaul the air in a whole room, but it is a welcome bonus on top of the way it looks. Is the Dracaena Marginata a lucky plant? In several traditions it is considered one. The Dracaena genus includes lucky bamboo, and in feng shui these upright, easy-growing plants are linked with steady good fortune and fresh energy. Whether or not that sways you, a healthy plant in a corner you used to ignore tends to lift a room on its own.
