Fuggle

Quintessential English Character • Earthy, Woody Depth • Cask Ale Classic Fuggle is the definitive English aroma hop, cultivated since the 1870s and responsible for the earthy, gently woodsy signature found in generations of British bitters, milds, and porters. Where American hops shout citrus, Fuggle speaks in soft, rounded tones that flatter malt rather than compete with it. With an alpha acid content of 4.5%, Fuggle offers mild, mellow bitterness alongside its classic aroma, making it a genuine all-rounder in traditional English recipes where a single hop often carries the entire schedule. Flavor & Aroma Profile Earthy, forest-floor character Soft woody notes Mild herbal, tea-like quality Cool hint of mint Smooth, understated bitterness Used lightly, Fuggle settles into the background and lets English malt shine. Heavier late additions bring its earthy, woody aroma forward, producing the unmistakable nose of a proper cask bitter. Brewing ApplicationsFuggle is a staple ingredient in many traditional English styles, including: Ordinary and Best Bitter English Mild English Porter Dry and Sweet Stout Extra Special Bitter (ESB) English Brown Ale It also pairs naturally with East Kent Goldings in classic two-hop English schedules and adds gentle depth to brown porters and old ales. Usage RecommendationsFor a 5 gallon batch, use 1–1.5 oz at 60 minutes for the bittering base and another 0.5–1 oz in the final 15 minutes for authentic aroma. Lower rates give a quiet, malt-led pint; higher late rates produce the earthy, herbal nose that defines the style. Combine Fuggle bittering with an East Kent Goldings finish — the most traditional pairing in English brewing — and ferment with an English strain like S-04 for a true pub-style ale.
