Crystals cannot get down to the odor through a layer of loose dirt. Shake the can lightly over the carpet. The reputation comes from heavy talc-based powders that people poured on and then only half picked up — that is what packs a bag and cakes a filter. Fresh Floors is a crystal rather than a talc, but it is still a fine one, so treat it the same way you would treat a room full of drywall dust: use a light hand, vacuum until nothing more comes up, and put a fresh bag in afterward. Ten to fifteen minutes for an ordinary room. For a basement or a room that has smelled for months, leave it an hour. It is not a spray — the working time is what does the job. Is it safe around pets and children? The crystals are all-natural and non-toxic, but the can is labeled an eye irritant, so keep it out of reach of children and stored with the lid on.
