Fragrant Tea Olive - Evergreen Shrub

The Most Fragrant Shrub You Can GrowThe Fragrant Tea Olive (Osmanthus fragrans) produces one of the most intoxicating scents in the plant world — a rich, sweet blend of apricot and jasmine that carries on the breeze from remarkable distances. What makes it extraordinary is that it blooms repeatedly from fall through spring, filling your garden with fragrance during the seasons when most plants are dormant. Its dense, glossy evergreen foliage provides year-round structure and privacy screening, making it as functional as it is beautiful. Why Gardeners and Designers Love Tea Olive Exceptional fragrance — tiny white flowers produce an outsized apricot-jasmine scent detectable from 30+ feet away; blooms fall through spring Year-round evergreen structure — dense, glossy dark-green foliage provides privacy screening, hedging, and backdrop planting Repeat bloomer — flowers multiple times per year in ideal conditions, unlike most fragrant shrubs Deer-resistant — a reliable choice in landscapes with heavy deer pressure Extremely low maintenance — drought-tolerant once established; rarely needs pruning to maintain a natural form Versatile landscape use — works as a specimen, privacy hedge, espalier, or large container plant Hardiness & Growing Zones USDA Hardiness Zones: 7–11 Zone 7: Hardy in-ground; may experience some leaf damage in severe winters — plant in a sheltered location with southern or eastern exposure for best results Zones 8–9: Ideal conditions; grows vigorously with prolific, repeat blooming fall through spring Zones 10–11: Thrives in heat; blooming may shift more toward cooler months (fall–winter); provide afternoon shade in the hottest microclimates Zones 5–6: Grow in a large container (15+ gal) and overwinter indoors in a bright, cool location Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade (full sun produces the most prolific blooming; tolerates shade well) Soil: Adaptable to most well-drained soils; slightly acidic preferred (pH 6.0–7.0) Mature size: 10–20 ft tall × 6–10 ft wide if unpruned; easily maintained at 6–10 ft as a hedge or specimen Bloom time: Fall through spring (October–April in most zones); may bloom multiple times per year Planting & Care TipsPlant in well-drained soil with good air circulation. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, then reduce frequency — established Tea Olive is quite drought-tolerant. Fertilize once in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Pruning is rarely necessary for natural form; if shaping for a hedge, prune lightly after each bloom flush to avoid removing next season’s flower buds. Avoid heavy pruning in fall, which can reduce winter blooming. Available Sizes 3 Gallon — well-established root system; ready to establish quickly in the landscape 2–3 ft.
