FOTO Frieda – Bold Encaustic Photography Artwork Inspired by Frida Kahlo

FOTO Frieda : A Tribute to Boldness, Beauty, and the Power of Art Some art finds you when you least expect it. Walking through the streets of Mexico, I turned a corner and there she was — Frieda, immortalized in color, alive with passion, and unapologetically bold. This striking street mural, discovered by pure serendipity, felt like an offering to the creative spirit, a raw and vibrant testament to the legendary Frieda Kahlo herself. The brilliance of the colors, the floral flourishes, and the piercing gaze all spoke of resilience, defiance, and an artist’s eternal imprint on the world. To honor the energy of this chance encounter, I’ve captured this mural in my FOTO series, a body of work that transforms my photographic journey into tactile, textured encaustic pieces. The image is printed and mounted onto a wooden cradle, then layered with encaustic wax, giving it an ethereal glow and a sense of timelessness. The wax allows the hues to deepen, textures to emerge, and a dreamlike patina to settle over the piece, making it feel as though Frieda herself is watching from another plane. The edges, rough with charcoal-textured paste, frame the work like an artifact preserved in time—a street-born masterpiece now reimagined. SIZE: 12" x 18" x 1" (30.5cm x 45.75cm x .2.5cm) Special Care for Encaustic Artwork... Encaustic artwork is created with a combination of beeswax (note for those who are allergic) and damar resin. This art form has existed for centuries, but because of the natural properties of the wax it does require to be displayed out of direct sunlight in a temperature controlled environment.
