These rivers are renowned for preserving fossils in their sandy bottoms, offering a glimpse into ecosystems that have existed for millions of years. Gar are among the oldest fish species still living today and are often referred to as "living fossils." Their ancestors first appeared over 100 million years ago, swimming alongside dinosaurs and surviving multiple mass extinction events. Modern gar have changed very little from their ancient relatives, making them one of the most successful fish lineages in Earth's history. Unlike the scales of most fish, gar scales are covered with a hard, enamel-like substance called ganoine, making them exceptionally durable and resistant to damage. These armor-like scales provided protection from predators and are one of the reasons gar have remained successful for millions of years. Their unique diamond-shaped scales are highly recognizable and prized by fossil collectors. Each fossilized scale displays its own natural shape, texture, and coloration acquired during the fossilization process. The specimen is securely housed in a protective Riker display case, making it perfect for display in a fossil collection, classroom, office, or curiosity cabinet.
