Foam and Stone

The Pacific meets the black volcanic sand of Hawaii in this moment. The deep blue of the water is the anchor for the piece, a steady presence that I felt had to be there to ground the energy of the surf. The white foam cuts across the dark sand in a jagged, living line, holding the motion of the wave just before it breaks. I tried to keep the texture of the sand gritty and real, so the piece feels less like a painting and more like a piece of the beach itself.
