To assist in the overall health of the tree, cover the roots of the tree with mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. This not only will protect it but will make your tree's shape and coloration stand out that much more dramatically. Birch love cool moist roots, so choosing your location and providing mulched beds is important for their longevity. Like Maples, Birch has sap that runs in the spring so prune after flowering to avoid this.
