Fire Queen Marquise Ruby & Black Onyx Ring in Sterling Silver

Fire crowned in darkness. The Fire Queen sets a marquise-cut lab-grown ruby — a real, saturated blood-red corundum — against shoulders of deep, glossy natural black onyx, all held in an open Celtic knotwork band that reads as butterfly wings and lotus petals at once. Crafted in solid 925 sterling silver with a bright rhodium finish, it is a gothic-romantic engagement ring for those who want their stone to tell a story rather than follow a tradition. Lab-grown ruby center Natural black onyx accents Marquise cut Celtic butterfly-lotus band Solid 925 sterling silver Rhodium finish A regal, gothic silhouette Blood-red ruby at the heart, jet-black onyx at the shoulders, and twisting Celtic knotwork flowing down each side of the band — the Fire Queen is unapologetically dramatic. Read one way the open metalwork becomes butterfly wings flanking the center stone; read another, the pointed apex accents unfurl like lotus petals above and below. It is a design made for dark-romance, witchy and alternative brides, and it sits proudly among our gothic engagement rings. For more ways to style a saturated, shadowed palette, our gothic wedding ring guide is full of inspiration. The lab-grown ruby center The center stone is a genuine lab-grown ruby — real corundum, the very same mineral as mined ruby, with the same chemistry, the same brilliant color, and the same extraordinary hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond. It sits at the classic blood-red end of the ruby spectrum, and the marquise cut, worn vertically, draws the eye along the finger and gives that saturated red real presence on the hand. Choosing lab-grown means an identical, durable ruby with full traceability and no mining footprint — the practical and ethical way to wear a true red ruby engagement ring. The natural black onyx accents Flanking the ruby and anchoring the upper and lower apex points are accents of natural black onyx — a variety of chalcedony quartz with a deep, opaque jet-black body and a smooth, glassy polish. Sitting around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, onyx has been treasured since antiquity for its even color and mirror sheen. The black-on-red contrast is the whole point: the onyx keeps the design dark, intentional and dramatic in a way white accents never could. Prefer a purely dark palette? Our black onyx engagement rings collection is full of jet-black options, and to explore the family of dark gems onyx belongs to, see our guide to black gemstones. The Celtic butterfly-lotus band The open band is built on classical Celtic knotwork — interlacing loops with no beginning and no end, the old symbol of eternal connection. Trace it horizontally and it reads as butterfly wings, a nod to transformation and rebirth; trace it vertically and the apex points bloom like lotus petals, a symbol of purity and rising through hardship into beauty. The ring holds all three readings at once, so its meaning deepens the longer you wear it. Sterling silver with a rhodium finish The band is solid 925 sterling silver — genuine sterling throughout, not plated base metal — finished with rhodium, the same precious white metal used on fine white gold. Rhodium gives the silver a bright, mirror-white luster and adds scratch and tarnish resistance, and its cool tone is the ideal backdrop for a saturated red-and-black palette, letting the stones carry the entire color story. The ring is also nickel-free and hypoallergenic. What ruby and black onyx symbolize Ruby has stood for centuries as the stone of passion, vitality and courage — the July birthstone and the traditional 15th and 40th anniversary gem — while black onyx is worn for protection, grounding and standing firm under pressure. Together they read as passionate love grounded in strength. To dig into that meaning, our guide to black onyx meaning and our feature on Victorian gothic engagement rings are both worth a read, and you will find companion pieces among our gothic couple rings. The lab-grown ruby is one of the most durable engagement stones there is (Mohs 9) and handles daily wear beautifully; the black onyx is softer, so avoid hard knocks, harsh chemicals and ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Clean gently with warm water and a soft brush, buff the rhodium finish with a soft cloth, and store the ring separately from other jewelry. Resizing is available starting from a modest fee. Frequently asked questions Is the ruby real? Yes. It is a genuine lab-grown ruby, real corundum with the same chemistry, color and hardness (Mohs 9) as mined ruby. The only difference is its controlled laboratory origin, which means identical beauty with full traceability and no mining footprint. What is the difference between lab-grown and mined ruby? Both are real ruby with identical chemistry, hardness, color and sparkle. Lab-grown is created in a controlled setting, offering consistent color and excellent value, while mined ruby commands a premium for its natural origin. Visually they are often indistinguishable. Is the black onyx natural? Yes. The accents are natural black onyx, a chalcedony quartz with a deep, glossy jet-black body, polished to a mirror finish. The black-on-red contrast gives the ring its dramatic character. How big is the center ruby? The marquise ruby is approximately 0.6 to 0.8 carats. Because the marquise cut spreads longer than a round of the same weight, it reads larger on the finger, and its vertical orientation elongates the hand. What does the Celtic butterfly-lotus symbolism mean? The design layers three readings: Celtic knots for eternal connection, butterfly wings for transformation and rebirth, and lotus petals for rising through hardship into beauty. Together they suggest an enduring bond that keeps growing. Why is it called Fire Queen? The saturated blood-red ruby reads as fire, and combined with the dramatic black onyx, Celtic metalwork and regal marquise silhouette, the design carries the presence of a queen's regalia rather than a soft, subtle bridal piece. What aesthetic does this ring suit? It fits gothic romance, dark cottagecore, witchy and vampire-romantic bridal, dark-fae and Celtic neo-traditional styles — ideal for anyone drawn to dramatic, saturated, symbolic engagement rings over the traditional white solitaire. How durable is it for daily wear? The ruby center is second only to diamond in hardness (Mohs 9) and wears extremely well. The black onyx accents are softer (Mohs 6.5 to 7), so with sensible care the ring holds up beautifully as a daily piece. What metal is it made from? Solid 925 sterling silver, finished with rhodium for a bright white luster and added scratch and tarnish resistance. It is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. Will sterling silver turn my finger green? No. Genuine 925 sterling silver does not turn skin green; that reaction is linked to low-quality base metals. This ring is solid sterling throughout and finished with rhodium. Does ruby have anniversary meaning? Yes. Ruby is the July birthstone and the traditional gift for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries, long associated with passion, love and vitality, which makes this a meaningful milestone ring as well. How do I clean it? Clean gently with warm water and a soft brush, and buff the rhodium finish with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic or steam cleaners, and store the ring separately from other jewelry. Are the stones ethically sourced? Yes. The lab-grown ruby has no mining footprint, and the natural black onyx is ethically sourced and conflict-free. Every order ships in a free luxury velvet gift box with a lifetime warranty.
