Fire & Blood

6b George R. R. Martin, illustrations by Doug Wheatley. New York, 2018. Signed first edition. Notes Fire & Blood is a historical fantasy novel by George R.R. Martin, published in 2018. It is a prequel to his A Song of Ice and Fire series, the basis for the hit television show Game of Thrones. Set in the world of Westeros, Fire & Blood focuses on the history of House Targaryen, starting with Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen to unite the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and spanning several generations of this powerful dynasty. The novel is written in the form of a fictional historical chronicle, with the narrative being presented as though it is a record of the Targaryen family’s rise, conflicts, and eventual downfall, based on the work of a maester from the Citadel. The story in Fire & Blood covers events long before the main A Song of Ice and Fire series, delving into the Targaryen civil war known as the "Dance of the Dragons," the early conquests, and the challenges the family faced in maintaining power. The novel introduces readers to many key characters from the Targaryen dynasty, including Aegon I, Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Daemon Targaryen, among others, providing deep lore and background that enriches the world-building Martin is known for. The book is notable for its detailed world-building, rich history, and the political intrigue and power struggles that characterize the Targaryen family. Although it is a historical account rather than a traditional novel, Fire & Blood serves as an essential companion for fans of Martin’s world, setting the stage for future works, including the upcoming House of the Dragon TV series, which is based on the events of this book.
