Ruby Ficus Plant - Ficus elastica ‘Ruby’

T he Ruby Ficus, botanically known as Ficus elastica 'Ruby', is one of the world's most popular easy-to-care-for indoor plants, admired for its thick woody stems and leathery, oval-shaped, tri-color leaves.  Often it is called the variegated rubber tree, it showcases a stunning variegation pattern of cream, olive green, and strawberry-red hues that look as if they were painted by hand. This eye-catching coloration has made it a popular houseplant for modern interior design and tropical foliage collectors alike. When grown indoors, this Ruby Ficus plant can grow up to 8 feet tall and about 3 feet wide, making it a fantastic choice for bright living rooms, office corners, and sunny entryways.  The intensity of its signature pink variegation is highly dependent on light, with the brightest pink tones appearing on new growth when the plant receives adequate exposure.  The upright, tree-like growth habit of this Ruby Ficus creates a strong architectural silhouette that easily elevates the design of any room.  This Ficus Ruby Plant rarely produces flowers indoors, and even in its native tropical habitats, its blossoms are small, green, and hidden inside a specialized, enclosed inflorescence (a syconium) that resembles a tiny, non-ornamental fig.  Valued for its air-purifying qualities, long lifespan, and ability to adapt to typical indoor conditions, the Ruby Ficus is also relatively drought-tolerant once established, making it a dependable choice for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts. When and How to Water Your Ruby Ficus  It prefers a consistent watering schedule and thrives when its soil remains evenly moist but never soggy. When in doubt, let it drought! Ruby Ficus is much more tolerant of slightly dry soil than consistently wet roots, so allowing the top few inches of soil to dry before watering helps prevent overwatering and root rot.  The Ficus ruby should typically be watered every 1–2 weeks during the active growing season (March–September) and every 2 weeks during the dormant winter season (October–February), adjusting as needed based on your indoor temperature, pot type, and soil dryness. During the spring and summer, water your plant when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch. Water thoroughly until excess water drains freely from the bottom of the pot, then promptly empty the saucer so the roots are not left sitting in water. During the fall and winter, reduce watering because the plant's growth naturally slows down and the soil takes longer to dry out. Allow the top half of the potting mix to dry out before watering again, and avoid keeping the soil wet for extended periods to keep the root system healthy.  Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Ruby Ficus Plant  When growing indoors, place your Ficus ruby elastica in bright, indirect light for 6–8 hours each day to encourage vibrant pink variegation and sturdy stems. A spot right next to an east-facing window or a few feet away from a bright south- or west-facing window is ideal. Protect the foliage from intense, unshaded afternoon sun, which can fade the brilliant pink tones and burn the leaves.  When grown outdoors, it performs best in partial shade to bright filtered sun in USDA Hardiness Zones 10–11, where temperatures remain warm year-round. Place your Ficus plant on a bright covered patio, a shaded porch, or within a protected garden bed. In cooler climates, grow it in a container so you can easily bring it indoors before autumn temperatures fall below 55°F. Too little light can slow its growth and cause the new leaves to revert to plain, dark green, losing the signature "ruby" variegation over time. Harsh, direct afternoon sun through a window may scorch the leaves. Providing a consistent balance of bright filtered light is the most important factor for maintaining intense variegation and bushy growth. Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs  The Ruby plant grows best in a rich, loose, well-draining potting mix that retains just enough moisture while allowing excess water to drain away easily. Planting it in heavy, ordinary garden soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and root issues. Ideally, you want to use our specialized potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your houseplant to thrive.  To support lush foliage and continuous new leaf production, feed your plant with a balanced liquid NPK fertilizer during the spring and summer growing season. Apply the fertilizer at half-strength every 4–6 weeks. Stop fertilizing entirely during the fall and winter months when the plant enters its natural resting phase and does not require extra nutrients. How to Grow Indoors as a Houseplant The Ficus elastica Ruby makes an outstanding houseplant, admired for its colorful, leathery leaves that bring an instant tropical paradise feel to indoor spaces. Place your plant in a spot that receives bright, indirect light, such as right next to an east-facing window or a few feet away from a bright south-facing window. Intense, direct afternoon sun must be avoided to prevent the harsh rays from scorching and fading the vibrant ruby-pink foliage. This tropical native should only be watered when the top 2 inches of the potting mix feels completely dry to the touch. All excess water needs to drain freely from the bottom of the pot so the roots never sit in waterlogged soil. The ruby plant must be kept in a warm room far away from drafty doorways, air conditioners, and heating vents to avoid sudden temperature shocks. Hardiness Zone & More  In the United States, this Ficus ruby is most widely enjoyed as an indoor houseplant, where its bright variegation adds color to rooms year-round. Outdoors, it can live in the ground year-round only in completely frost-free tropical environments like southern Florida, southern California, and Hawaii within USDA Hardiness Zones 10–11. In these regions, it makes a fantastic accent tree for bright courtyards, entryways, and vibrant garden borders.  It thrives in steady warmth between 65°F and 85°F and will suffer damage if exposed to temperatures below 50°F. It prefers moderate to high humidity, which keeps the leaf margins from drying out. While it appreciates good air movement, it should be shielded from strong, drying winds that can quickly sap moisture from its broad foliage. Wildlife – Ficus Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators  While the Ficus elastica 'Ruby' is grown almost entirely for its spectacular, colorful foliage rather than its blossoms. When grown outdoors in tropical or subtropical climates, its hidden, tiny flowers are highly specialized and rely on a mutualistic relationship with specific tiny pollinating wasps (specifically fig wasps) to reproduce, rather than attracting typical garden butterflies or bees.  According to the ASPCA, the entire Ficus genus is considered mildly toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. The plant contains a milky latex sap that can cause skin irritation upon contact, and ingestion may lead to oral discomfort, drooling, vomiting, and stomach upset. It is best styled on sturdy plant stands, low tables, or floor spaces safely out of reach of curious pets and children.  How to Propagate Your Ficus Elastica Ruby You can propagate your plant through stem cuttings or air layering during the warm spring or early summer months. Locate a healthy, mature stem tip with several leavesC Cut a 4-to-6-inch section just below a leaf node using a clean, sterile blade, being mindful of the dripping milky sap. Dip the cut end into rooting hormone powder to speed up development. Insert the base of the cutting into a small pot filled with a moist, lightweight propagation mix. Keep the cutting in a warm, humid spot with bright indirect light. Over several weeks, it will establish a new root system and can be transitioned into standard potting soil. Potting and Repotting Your Plant This colorful tropical plant likes to be relatively settled in its container and doesn't require frequent disturbance. Repot your Ruby Ficus only every 2–3 years during the spring, or whenever you notice the roots circling tightly around the bottom of the pot or growing out of the drainage holes.  Always choose a container with functional drainage holes at the bottom to let excess water escape. Move up only one pot size at a time (such as from a 6-inch pot to an 8-inch pot) to prevent excess surrounding soil from holding onto too much water. When repotting is complete, fill in the gaps with fresh, well-draining soil, water lightly, and place it back in its favorite bright spot.  Key Takeaways The Ruby Ficus is a widely grown tropical houseplant and ornamental tree prized for its vibrant foliage, bold colors, and ability to brighten indoor and outdoor spaces year-round.
