Ficus Altissima

Ficus Altissima: Bright, Easygoing Statement Tree If you love ficus trees but want something a little fresher, Ficus altissima brings bold color and easy structure to your space. Known as the council tree or lofty fig, this tropical native from Southeast Asia grows into a towering giant outdoors—but indoors, it stays a manageable, stylish 4–6 feet tall. Its smooth, glossy leaves are long and slightly pointed, patterned in vibrant shades of emerald and lime. The popular ‘Yellow Gem’ cultivar adds eye-catching variegation that instantly lifts a room—like built-in sunlight for your plant shelf. In nature, it grows as an epiphyte, sending out aerial roots much like a banyan tree. Indoors, that translates to a strong, upright plant with character and presence—without taking over your ceiling. Why You’ll Love the Ficus Altissima Striking variegated foliage in bright green and golden tones Upright growth makes it a natural focal point for corners or entryways More forgiving than it looks—great for beginners with basic ficus care Works beautifully in containers indoors or on covered patios in warm months Pairs well with modern, minimal, or tropical-inspired décor Best Uses Indoor statement tree for living rooms, offices, or bedrooms Brightens neutral spaces with natural color contrast Container plant for patios or balconies in warm climates Great companion to other ficus varieties for a layered collection Care Made Simple Light: Bright, indirect light keeps the variegation vivid Water: Let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings Humidity: Enjoys average to slightly higher humidity Growth: Can be pruned to shape and size as needed Tip: Like most ficus, it prefers a stable spot—avoid frequent moves Think of Ficus altissima as a relaxed showpiece: bold enough to stand out, but easy enough to fit right into your routine.
